they can turn into any animal species, but prefer vertebrates. when they transform, they take on the most basic possible patterns of that species with no identifying variation. they never transform into a human, dog, or domestic horse, as those species are all incredibly varied and don't have a "default". in species with sexual dimorphism, they look like the female of that species.
