Out of his element from the ocean, he quickly gets help from Briney at a train stop. A series of small favors and errands ends with him becoming a longtime roommate. He never specifies what made him arrive in Salt Flats City in the first place.

- Relationship with Briney: Amazingly, after 2 years of sitting on Briney’s head the shrimp began chatting. This made Pepper insecure of himself for his usefulness. To keep his friendship with Pepper, Briney does not make any other friends. Pepper prefers it that as an intelligent solitary creature, he cannot understand dim-witted colony animals such as Briney.
