Not everyone is really cut out for adventuring, you know? Sometimes you just want to return to your library and not be out there fighting demon lords — lords plural! But more than the safety of her books, Moony loves her friends. And she can't just leave them to deal with this on their own. Just because she's a cleric of a death goddess doesn't mean burying people is easy.

About

When she and her twin brother, Drys, set out from home to study at Candlekeep, Moony did expect it to be life changing — just not in the way it was. While Drys was merely a visitor of the Keep, a bard beyond its walls, Moony set out to apprentice herself to the monks there, hoping to become one of the Avowed.

But after getting lost in the vast stacks one day, Moony stumbled across a book that called to her. Unable to pass it by, she pulled it from the stack and spent the following hours — days? — lost in its pages. It was not a dark book, though it was decorated in the iconography of the dead and whispered words of a forgotten death goddess, but a solemn one. She read its words and felt them whispered to her. She traced the sigils and felt power beneath her fingers. And when she pulled her hand from one such page, she came away with a black skull ring set with ruby eyes.

Apprentices didn't take from the library, only give, but this was hers.

Now devoted to Wee Jas, a goddess of death and beauty, Moony is one of her last clerics in this realm. Her practices are often odd, but she means well, doing what she can to aid others in her goddess's name. She has no mentor and no church, just her faith in the goddess to guide her.

Out of the Candles, Into the Fire

After the loss of her darkvision and some unfortunate mishaps with her necromantic practices, Moony set out on her own, traveleing north to the city of Waterdeep to find one of the few refuges for lone clerics like herself. She needed guidance and the Plinth, while not devoted to Wee Jas, housed lost clerics of the old ways. Surely, someone there would understand why both her divine and infernal gifts waivered.

Unfortunately, she never made it. In a drow attack on her caravan, Moony was captured and taken down into the Underdark, unsure what her fate would be. The drow drugged their prisoners, keeping her from even her remaining magic. But when two other young women were thrown into her prison, a plot began to form. Fasting for a few days and hiding their meals, Moony, Artemis, and Cora were able to recover enough power to make their escape with their fellow prisoners. It set off a nightmarish escape through the depths of the Underdark, but another captive, a gnome named Jimjar, was able to lead them a safe haven: Graven Hallow.

Graven Hallow was, to Moony, an even grander library than Candlekeep. Hidden in a pocket plane on the Dark Lake, Graven Hallow was home to a circle of eccentrics known as the Society of Vigilance. Tasked with preserving knowledge and keeping certain artifacts from the hands of those who would misuse it, the Society understood that this loss of darkvision and broken healing magic that had driven the young women prior to their capture was part of something more sinister: the return of Tharizdun.

If We Fight, We Fight Together

Wanting to find a way to stop the demon god's return and save, well, everyone, the young women were initiated into the Society through trial by fire. They helped take down a freshly risen demon lord, one of many that the breaking seals on Tharizdun's prison had brought forth. And, defying all odds, Moony was able to save Jimjar, her magic burning strong enough to reach beyond the veil and pull him back to them after his near sacrifice in the fight.

With time running out and Zirus, another Society member — and apparent ex-employer of Artemis and Cora — promising things would only get worse from here, the Society's work was only beginning. Hoping she could help Zirus with a cursed crown digging into his skull, Moony was unfortunately struck with the curse herself. The rebound left her hands blackened and shrivled, making even basic movement impossible. Unable to follow Artemis and Cora into future fights, Moony remained in Graven Hallow to recover.

In the time she spent in the halls, Moony became friendly with each of the Society members who lived there. Ilithids, lizardfolk, slaads, and other monstrous types, they welcomed the sweet little tiefling girl with ease. Most notable, of course, was Red. Red was curious and sweet and also happened to be a red oblex, but Moony enjoyed their company. They helped Moony around Graven Hallow and aided her in what ritual spellwork she tried to attempt to heal herself with the resources around her.

When all else failed, Moony decided to continue her journey to Waterdeep and the Plinth. This time, with Red at her side. Finding a nearly abandoned temple to Wee Jas and the other Greyhawk deities there, Moony spent hours tending the altars and praying to no avail. But she had faith. And then an older cleric, in simple brown robes, stumbled into her corner of the Plinth. He said he was told to come here, guided by his own god to help. Grumbar, priest of Grumbar, restored her hands at last.

She and Red spent some time in the City of Splendors after, continuing to tend to the altars each day while also exploring Waterdeep itself, before they decided it was time to return. (Though Moony baked a basket of cookies for Grumbar before they departed.) Now, back with the Society and even reunited with Cora and Artemis, Moony is back in the line of fire as they race against the clock and the dreaded Pale Lady, Tharizdun's Chosen.

Relationships

Drystan [ twin brother ]

Though technically the younger twin, Drystan always acts like Moony's big brother. When they were young, the mostly human boy teased his tiefling sister. When he grew up enough to realize maybe others wouldn't tease her so playfully, he became more protective of her. Following her to Candlekeep to pursue his own more musical studies, the young lore bard had to promise to agree to let Moony continue the next chapter in her story on her own when she left. Though not a follower of Wee Jas like his twin, he wears a ruby eyed skull brooch to keep her and her goddess with him.

Red [ themfriend ]

Like most of the denziens of Graven Hallow, Red tends to lean towards being more monstrous than human. That's just how it is when you're an ooze creature whose intellect comes stolen from other humanoids. But Red isn't just an ooze and they're trying their best to put their abilities to better use these days. Like offering to be Moony's hands for her. And holding her hand. Red really likes the hand holding part and so does Moony, so the two have been gently feeling out the relationship waters between oblex and tieflings since Moony's been healed.

Cora [ teammate ]

Though they met under dreadful circumstances, Moony has come to care for the young halfling woman very dearly. Sure she's a little bit edgey and goth, but aren't they all? Rather than be fearful of the discovery of said goth friend's relatively undead past and missing memories, Moony has vowed to help her remember and figure things out from there. She's still adjusting to the whole 'undead cyborg' part though. And really, aren't they all?

Artemis [ teammate ]

A bold psychic and constant companion of Cora, Moony met both girls in the drow prison and has considered them dear friends since. Though Artemis has several decades on them all with the whole elf thing, she's just as young and spirited as the rest of the playfully dubbed Goth Gal Gang. No matter what mess her psychic powers might get her in, Moony is always prepared to stand at her side.

Petra [ teammate ]

A newer addition to the team, Moony still isn't entirely sure what Petra's story is. Sometimes the older tiefling woman is a bit of a lot, but she has a lot of tired mom energy that Moony can respect. With the even more recent addition of her pet drake Mordecai, Moony has helpfully joined in with the task of teaching the little critter to understand Infernal as well as teach Petra a little Draconic.
