Then

Here is a list of places René Grey does not belong: church camp, Catholic school, military academy, crowded spaces, black-tie affairs, Women in Science & Engineering programs, working retail, or caring for children.

Naturally, he had to find all of this out the hard way.

Born on a horse farm, René spent most of his childhood fighting his way away from the dresses and dolls he always seemed to be swamped with. He wasn't a girl, he told his parents one day. He was a boy.

Confused but well-meaning, his parents at least dialed back on the feminine toys and clothes. For a while. They had bigger concerns, mostly about the fact that by the age of nine, René could lift a fully-grown horse over his head without breaking a sweat.

His uncanny strength made him a point of interest to more than a few parties, and when it came time for him to go to high school, a prestigious military academy was the most tempting offer. A full ride to any college he chose was nothing to sneeze at--even if it meant René would have to swallow his dysphoria and pretend he was "normal." And perhaps such a structured environment would help him control his temper.

At least, that was what he thought.

Instead, four days before graduation, René abandoned the school and all pretense of being a woman. He fled to Monster City on the advice of a friend, and after a rocky start managed to find a steady job and a place to live. He got his G.E.D., and immediately after began to medically transition.

Now

In an unlucky turn of events, René lost both his job and his lease within weeks of one another, one due to the store he was in going under, and the other due to his apartment literally disappearing. The whole building vanished and failed to return, which is not terribly uncommon in Monster City. A friend of a friend, one Karim Ashtiani, happened to have both an available job and a second bedroom he needed rent paid on. René took it.

He now works as an assistant in a psychologist's office alongside Karim, and sometimes "borrows" the books on anger management in the therapists' offices for his own perusal. He's since picked up weightlifting, having found Monster City to be much more inhuman-strength-friendly, and spends a lot of time checking out Karim's ass. He thinks Karim hasn't noticed. He's wrong.

Trivia

  • René did not grow up quite Amish, but he didn't use a computer until he was fifteen. Video games baffle him, and his phone is perpetually two generations behind.
  • Being red-headed and presenting female as a child, when his strength was discovered, he was dubbed "Pippi Longstocking" by a number of friends and relatives. He grew up hating the name, but recently read the books and found them surprisingly charming.
  • He was definitely not supposed to develop a crush on his housemate, and is furious about this.
  • Despite living in a city of literal monsters, he keeps his unusual strength largely to himself. As far as he's aware, he has no monsters in his family tree, and no particular reason to be as strong as he is. He's not ashamed of it, but is tired of being asked what he "really" is.
