mael is referred to as king of the vampires, though he insists he isn't. he's the leader of the lunaire district hierarchy, ranked above some of his closest friends.
mael governs almost all of monsterkind, though he has helpers beneath him who dictate new laws and decisions.
his sons, lucien and draven - are next in line to run the system, though mael would prefer it go to lucien. draven has no interest in taking the throne, and neither does lucien.
mael specifically chose lucien to be his heir, but lucien refuses to accept until the taboo surrounding blood/feeding in the vampire community disappears.
