Dutiful

Jo will never hesitate to help out, no matter how mundane the task may seem. She often picks up the small and pointless tasks that her fellow Garrison soldiers brush to the side, and does these with gusto. She knows her priorities and sticks to them, even if she doesn't get much recognition from achieving them. While others are slacking on the job, Jo can be seen in the background, quietly double checking things and making sure everything is up to snuff.

Keeps to herself

Jo is somewhat standoffish due to most of her recent interactions with other members of the Training/Garrison regiments. One would almost say that she has social anxiety, which isn't helped by the fact that she speaks very softly and has a slight stutter. Surprisingly, she doesn't really mind, as keeping relations to a minimum would only make it easier to achieve her goal. In fact, she prefers being alone, save for the one or two people she chooses to interact with.

Dexterous

Although hand-to-hand combat wasn't her strong suit, Jo excels at using 3D maneuvering gear. Many thought that 3D maneuvering would be the end of her training career because of her leg, but it was because of her leg that she did so well. While relearning to walk, she made it a point to practice and heighten her sense of balance and reaction time to shifts in weight. For her, learning the maneuvering gear was almost the same as learning to walk. She is one of the most agile maneuverers in the Garrison, and although she really doesn't need to practice it, she can sometimes be found hopping from rooftop to rooftop in the early hours of the morning, furthering her abilities.

About

Jo was 13 years old when Wall Maria was breached by the Titans. Her home district- Shiganshina- was the first city to fall. During the breach, when the Colossus Titan broke through the gate, it unleashed a torrent of rock and rubble that rained down upon the district, ultimately resulting in one of Jo's legs being crushed. Although her parents tried their hardest to free her leg from the rubble, it was just too heavy. As they were about to loose hope, a first-responder from the Garrison Regiment happened to cross their path. He ordered Jo's parents to escape the district, and immediately began working on trying to free her. But, just like her parents, his efforts were in vain. The Titans were slowly closing in on them. Not wanting to leave the poor girl to be eaten by the Titans, he did the only thing he could do: Take his blade and cut off her trapped leg. He wrapped her leg in his jacket and carried her to safety, but by the time they got to the pier and the boats that were shuttling civilians out of the district, they were too late; the last boat was just pulling off from the dock, leaving crowds of helpless townsfolk behind.

The unknown Garrison soldier had two options: he could either use the last of his energy to throw Jo across the water and onto the boat, or leave her behind and make his own bid for safety. Either way, only one of them was going to make it out of Shiganshina that day. In the end, the Garrison soldier chose to give his last chance at life to Jo, and he threw her onto the boat and into the hands of safety. The last thing Jo remembered before she fell unconscious from blood loss was the sight of that soldier standing on the pier, watching her with a fulfilled look as the Titans closed in on the stranded townsfolk. Since that day, she had never heard nor seen from that soldier again, and had accepted the fact that he had given his life to save her.

She never forgot about the Garrison soldier in the years following her recovery. As soon as she could manage, she began re-learning how to walk. Every time she felt like she was getting tired, she would remember the sacrifice he had made for her and force herself to work harder. In the end, it took her only a month until she was back walking on her "feet" again, albeit, she had a slight limp that would last her the rest of her life.

After a few more months of perfecting her gait with her new leg, she made a crucial decision: She was going to join the the Training Corps and work towards becoming a Garrison Regiment soldier. She felt that this was the only true way to repay the man who had saved her on that fateful day... to take his place in the Garrison and protect civilians just as he had. There was much protest from her parents, as was to be expected; they had nearly lost her once from a Titan attack, and now she wanted to go and join the regiment who were the first to be sent out in the case of another. But, with much persuading, Jo managed to change their minds.

Her time in the Training Corps was far from ideal. Initially, she almost didn't make it in due to her leg. The only reason they really inducted her was for the amusement of watching her struggle and inevitably fail. Of course, she was given a hard time by both her commanders and fellow trainees because of her condition, but through it all, she persisted, the promise she had made to the Garrison soldier a point in which she fixed her efforts on.

Eventually, and against all odds, she graduated with the 104th Training Corps. Although she didn't graduate at the top of her class, she was still proud of how far she had come. Either way, she soon was shipped off to the Garrison Regiment barracks and assigned to her first town: Trost, where she helped evacuate civilians during the Titan siege that took place shortly after the 104th graduated.

Trivia

Jo helps to man/repair the Titan Guillotines that border the walls along with other members of the Garrison Regiment.

Prior to joining the Training Corps, Jo's prosthetic looked a lot like a regular wooden leg. Though before she was shipped off, her father- a worker in the steel factories- presented her with her current leg: An athletic prosthetic made of super hard steel, the same material that Titan killing blades are made of. With a small fortune and a little bit of bribery, he was able to get one custom made for her at his factory. She has yet to replace it.

Although she was given a fresh uniform when she graduated the Training Corps, she actually wears the old jacket that was tied around her leg when she escaped Shiganshina. She managed to get most of the stains out, but there are a few left on the inner lining of the jacket that seem to be there permanently. She honestly likes them there; they're a constant reminder of her mission.
