"If this is truly the world the gods intended, I'll choose damnation instead."

Opal

Ophiel Castell Steele . He/She/They . Spirit

Opal lives in an urban/gaslamp fantasy. Their nation is known as the Partitioned Republic of Antithea. It is split into the West and the East, where two rival species are pitted against each other in an ongoing civil war. Opal's species, the spirits, have traditionally wielded great power and oppression over the "lesser species" known as the wraiths.

Having been indoctrinated into this life of hatred and fear, Opal suffers a shock when their preconceptions of the world turn out to be much more complicated than they were taught. Meeting- or rather stumbling head-first into- a wraith called Orion, initially their prisoner, turns their life upside down. Having been exposed to the true nature of the corrupt nation's division, they choose to never return to the blind ignorance they once lived in, but unlearning an entire way of life is an arduous task.

history

Opal grew up with their mother and younger brother in a comfortable middle class household. The loss of his father at age 12 lit him ablaze and transformed a sweet and timid child into one fueled by determination. Under the belief that his father's death was caused by wraiths, this led him to become a correctional officer later in life, blinded by vitriol and ideology.

Opal didn't meet Orion in any traditional sense, Orion having been thrown in an abusive "rehabilitation" facility for wraiths and Opal being the one responsible for keeping him there. With how vehemently Orion fought and cursed against her, Opal nearly convinced herself that all her prejudices about wraiths were correct. Still, she couldn't shake the gnawing feeling that something wasn't right. As she tried to truly get to know him through the bars of a cell, a new and even more frightening reality settled in- she had gladly accepted the lies she was fed all her life and had been wrong about everything- including the true perpetrators behind her father's death.

Design Notes

  • Prominent white eyelashes
  • Androgynous face shape and build, but slightly curvy
  • Elongated but rounded ears

Despite the harsh world they live in, Opal loves Orion to the ends of the earth- even granted their differences and even when Orion is acting like the stubborn ass he is

Opal always knew they could rely on their younger brother. Even given their trivial fights as kids, a foundation of stronger trust and love began to build between them as they grew older.
