Is there a fate worse than death?

Many cats in PAIN would certainly call it one. It's a plane which trapped them and cursed them and waits for them to die. Surrounding them with fellow warped cats, many of whom would gladly make their death arrive a little faster. Surely, PAIN is that worse fate they never deserved.

But if there was one thing keeping PAIN just shy from being the worst fate imaginable, it was that at the very least... you could eat.

And not just that, the food provided wasn't unlike the food you'd had in life! Those little, skittering, easy to kill creatures. Tasting of a forgotten, familiar safety.

Prey.

Despite their otherworldly, shadowy nature, PAIN's Prey acts much the same as prey animals from life. Coming in all sorts of forms, but always resembling small animals that cats may easily prey upon. The largest they get is perhaps the rare rabbit-like one.

With fraying fur and feathers and splitting scales and tails - not to mention the occasional extra limbs - Prey can certainly seem unappetizing at first. Almost sickly looking with an unusual quantity and placement of eyes. They often twitch and stumble as if dazed... But, if you can get past all that, you'll find they're completely safe to eat and not unpleasant at all!

A Prey's exact taste varies with seemingly little rhyme or reason between individuals (although there seems to be consistent, specific flavors that they vary between) but they never taste bad - even to cats with pickier palates! Even if it's weird eating a consistently sinewy mass of boneless, black flesh. In which the fur is just as edible as the rest of the creature.

Their population throughout PAIN is consistent, but different territories have differing density of them. No area is completely absent Prey however, even if Fear's territory seems to kill Prey on its own... It doesn't seem as if Prey need to eat either. They're only ever hiding and running.

Oddly, those with mind manipulation or reading abilities seemingly have some effect over Prey, though it's inconsistent and very quiet. Try not to focus on it too much, if there's one thing that'll dampen a good meal it's hearing it cry for help.
