Tanager is an excitable and energetic skywing hybrid and a new student attending Jade Mountain Academy.

Tanager is a dragon of average size and build. Most of her scales are a dull brown with an oak-coloured underbelly and patches of deep reddish brown around her shoulders, talons, and the tip of her tail. From her chest to about the midpoint of her neck her underbelly fades into a vibrant sandy yellow. The same colour is present on the upper half of her face, above the jawline and fading out past her eye. Below the jawline at the tip of her snout is a deep reddish brown gradient. The same brown appears in three stripes on her face, one beside each of her eyes and one running along the center ridge of her head, all three fading into yellow about halfway down her snout. The point at which her underbelly meets the rest of her body too is reddish brown, as is the dorsal side of her wings. The ventral side is instead a sandy brown. Hey eyes, claws, horns, and spines are all dark brown, nearing black. She wears a single pale yellow hibiscus tucked behind her right ear.

Tanager is an extremely upbeat and cheery character. Her playful nature and positive outlook on the world are perfectly obvious from the moment you encounter her. She is very ambitious and works tirelessly to achieve her goals, sometimes to her own detriment. Over the years she's developed a habit of repressing most of her negative emotions, an ineffective short-term coping mechanism that often harms her more in the end. This, alongside her already short patience, has caused her to have a dangerously short fuse to an explosive temper, a harsh contrast to her usual demeanour. For as long as she can remember, Tanager's had something of a fascination with the surreal and grotesque. What others tend to deem weird and horrifying, she tries to find the beauty in.

Tanager struggles a lot with managing her anger. It's not uncommon for her emotions to get the better of her, leading to furious outbursts and actions she'll later regret. She's also not the most intelligent - which is what prompted her to apply to the academy in the first place - and she knows this. Her general inattentiveness and inability to retain information make it difficult for her to learn new things, not that this stops her from trying anyway.

Ever the optimist, Tanager's happy-go-lucky attitude allows her to live a fairly carefree life, unburdened by stress or worry. Physically, she's well fit and healthy thanks to all the work she does around her hometown. On top of this, she's deceptively strong despite what her soft appearance may lead you to believe, although she remains untrained in proper combat.

Tanager had a fairly average upbringing, raised in a rural town near the outskirts of the Sky Kingdom alongside her older sister, Swallow. Tanager would often spend her time helping the townsfolk with small jobs and tasks and also worked with her sister on their own crop garden. While she had been attending the local school for most of her dragonethood, upon learning about the opportunities that awaitied her at JMA she seized the chance to apply as soon as she could.

• Enhanced Flying: Tanager is built for flying long distances and is much faster in flight than most other tribes due to her exceptionally large wingspan. Additionally, she also has naturally high endurance and stamina
• Cold Resistance: As part skywing, Tanager is adapted to withstand the cold temperatures of the mountains. She is resistant to far colder temperatures than most other tribes, with the one exception being icewings. Unlike icewings, she isn't immune to hypothermia or frostbite.
• Prehensile Tail: Tanager has a long prehensile tail used for navigating the rainforest in various ways, such as swinging on trees and hanging off branches. When not in use, her tail curls around itself, similar to a chameleon's.
