In the past Yuuma was far from the mellow kitsune which he is today.

Back then he was arrogant and blind to the needs of others. He lived for himself and the only goal he had was to satisfy his own desires. Everyone else were mere stepping stones existing solely to benefit him and him alone. Those who failed to acknowledge his excellency were fools who often faced death by his fangs and claws. Whatever role had been bestowed upon him by Inari was forgotten and with each selfish deed Yuuma did his snow white coat got tainted. With time a reddish tint took its place.

But the color of his coat meant nothing to Yuuma as long as it remained shiny and healthy. The kitsune attempted to preserve his youth and beauty by any means necessary, thinking that his looks had begun to deteriorate even when it wasn't so. He was delusional. Lotions, powders, serums- he tried them all but never felt satisfied with their effects. In his desperation Yuuma turned to look for a solution among the humans and found what he needed. By consuming the hearts of beautiful human youths with pure souls he could finally feel satisfied and most importantly relieved for he had found his very own fountain of youth.

His new hobby stayed under control only for a short amount of time before turning into a full out addiction that consumed his life. Many were slaughtered during Yuuma's pursue for greater beauty and his deeds were starting to gain more attention than what he would have wanted. It was his own greed and arrogance which brought his own downfall and he has only himself to blame for that. In a matter of one day the humans sealed his soul away so that he could never terrorize the people ever again.

Trapped in the void between space and time Yuuma could only scream and shout to quell the raging flames of anger burning hot within his chest. He did everything to break free only to realize that the lock he was trying to destroy was on the other side. Out of his reach. Someone would need to open it from the other side for him but who would be crazy enough to do that? The thought of it made Yuuma pause his raging and actually think about himself and what he had done. The kitsune had all the time in the world to do so and at the end of a very long silence the only conclusion he could come to was; he was a monster and there was nothing beautiful in that.

There was so much time to think and reflect. Yuuma came to regret his own actions and mourned the loss of all the young souls he had taken from the world before their time. Being trapped in the void was best for him. He had deserved it. And just like that the kitsune embraced his solitude life within the nothingness. Whatever anger he had felt was gone and all the plans for escape vanished from his mind. The wicked had to be punished and if this was it for him, then so be it. Yuuma accepted it without complaints.

Awakening

No one knows how long Yuuma slept in the void for time didn’t move there in the same way it moves in the world of the living. Maybe it doesn’t move at all? Whatever the case- at some point, somehow, the seal which kept his soul locked was broken and the kitsune regained consequence in the world he had been banished from. You’d think that such a miracle would make anyone happy but instead Yuuma felt worried and agitated. He didn’t deserve freedom.

He sat there quietly waiting for something to happen, for someone to storm in and detain him, seal his soul away again and fix the seal. But nothing. Finally he had gathered enough courage to move and breath the fresh air of the outdoors for the first time in forever. If this was how things were going to be, Yuuma swore to use his time to do more good than bad. For each life he took he would save another. It wouldn’t make what he had done go away but it would help him sleep better at night.

The way he approached his newest challenge was to study and become a healer. Or rather; a doctor, as they call them in the current day. He wore his illusions and stepped among the humans once again. This time without ill will. Yuuma even studied the western medicine for it seemed useful, despite some of his peers in the human world frowning upon it. Strangely enough it felt good to be helpful to others. To give and take, not just take without giving anything in return.

For many years he studied and for many more he would help the sick. Feeling content for his achievements. The stains of his sins would be forever with him. But he had shown how his hands were capable of doing more than just taking lives. And if you are in need of a caretaker, rumor has it that if you walk into the woods to a specific clearing and leave a small offering on the tree stump with your request, help would reach you.
