Literally how is it still alive

Eric was Whitmore's first anomaly capturing/extermination mission, being shot by him in the head but later it was discovered Eric had a secondary brain located in his torso, which explained his accidental now vegetative/lobotomized state. Eric is still heavily aggressive but recognized Whitmore as his feeder and tends to tolerate him in the same cell (although not stopping trying to stealthily kill him whenever it has the chance).

Eric's real sex is still unsure, as well most of it's anatomy as it's still being studied by The Greater Good, either way, it was named Eric by Whitmore and therefore male pronouns were adopted. Eric's intelligence is low and can still be compared to animals, where it's only purposes are survival and reproduction, is unsure what Eric is made of or if he is a manmade weapon.
