He is Sheru’s older brother from another mother, that’s why sheru never met him (he lived with his father). 

For context if any butterfly family member has a child that child will inherit the butterfly marking. Depending on their butterfly related powers their markings are always slightly different. But if both parents have inheritable powers, that also affects the butterfly marking; it shifts to represent both abilities. 

Joshua’s marking is a butterfly with two swirls on each side representing his power to hypnotize and disorientate. He’s also a mix of inheritable powers, shown by his butterfly having a cats tail.
