About

A secondborn kidnapped as a sapling, Eldulis was forced to peer into something that peered back-- and never stopped looking through his eyes.

Traits
  • The barkskin on his face has largely peeled away; he also used to have beautiful flowering branches, which have withered to nothing.
  • He is still, technically, capable of blooming. If he were in a good state of mind, he might.
  • After fleeing the Arbor for the second time, he tends to hide his face to avoid being recognized.
Pack
  • Sand dollar (from a long time ago)
  • Music Box (working up the courage to replace the one he broke.)
  • Mordrem vine cuttings (he has somewhat of an interest in them.)
  • Flute (hand carved)
Background

Eldulis is a secondborn of the Night cycle. Like so many of his generation, he was full of curiosity. Along with some twenty-odd other secondborn, he was taken by their asuran neighbors to a laboratory, where they were summarily tortured and many of them killed. Of the twenty taken that day, four remained: Eldulis, Canach, Faus, and Resila. Drawn together by the horrors they had born witness to and the experiments forced upon them, the four survivors (technically five, with exiled Deorai) should have been given a network of support to ensure their healing. Instead, sylvari society turned a polite eye as each of them slowly, steadily worsened. Eldulis was the most blatant and quick to turn rotten among the four of them. Where Faus stopped talking to people, and Resila denied that she'd been taken, and Canach seemed to not care, to not really be affected, Eldulis found that he could not emotionally leave the chamber he'd entered as a sapling. He was trapped there, and trapped in that room, he unlocked something horrible that stared out of him and into others.

His first usage of the mind peeling was on Deorai. He had been the first kidnapped, the test among test subjects, the one who had told the asura where to find more-- and though it was not intentional (it never was, when he did it) Eldulis peeled into Deorai's mind to witness his greatest, most agonizing moments, forcing them both to live through it together. As time passed and it happened again-- to other sylvari, to visiting embassaries from other races, to friends, to strangers-- he became a parriah, and eventually a recluse. It was hard to want to leave your home when doing so ensured you would torture someone else. It was hard for anyone to want you to leave the house too. Faolain took an interest in him, inviting him to come and join her court-- he declined at the time, based on her demand that he peel her mind first. The offer remained on the table for later.

Eventually some wardens would take it upon themselves to rehabilitate him by connected him with Lacrimosen, a sapling who'd dreamt of him. Though they would become close friends, something akin to lovers, Eldulis could never allow himself to look at Lacrimosen, and so their closeness suffered somewhat. Eventually, after yet another peeling, Eldulis would banish himself from the Grove, leaving Lacrimosen and the sylvari society behind to go to the Court, where at least his peeling might have some desired purpose.

Within a year, Faolain would appoint him Duke of Torment. He didn't enjoy it much. He didn't care about the Nightmare, and he felt little more connection with courtiers who cowered in fear of him than he had among dreamers who did the same. But at least in using his abillity, he'd learned how to control it, and so he was able to see people's faces again without forcing himself and them through their most intimate, horrifying memories. Five years after he joined the Court, Faolain gifted him Lionsbane Copse, and he was sent to run it, corrupting sylvari outposted in the area. Here, he was eventually sent Datura, a curious little weed from the coast. Datura showed absolutely zero interest in him, which was refreshing, after years of sniveling courtiers sucking up to him in hopes of promotion. But the more attention he paid to Datura, the sparser Datura became-- infuriating! He knew he could peel the other sylvari's mind and reach down into his psyche, see what he was hiding, but...

But he didn't want to. He wanted to learn the truth on his own terms. He made polite with the weed, while Datura showed as little interest in him as one possibly could, and eventually Eldulis grew sick of it and appointed him his Knight for the journey to the Arbor, where he was to take Faolain's old seat now that Reigin was dead and Lox missing. Midway through the Steamspur mountains, he cornered Datura and finally peeled his mind, living for a few horrible moments the torture he'd endured at Twilight Arbor before backing out of the memory. Eldulis decided that he wanted to protect Inoxiam then, and swore to keep his secrets-- what few he was aware of at that point.

During his trials at the Arbor, he was poisoned, and Inoxiam had to drag him out of the Arbor to try to save him. A third sylvari found them in the forest near the Arbor. Audden administered field medic care, then brought both of them back to Lacrimosen's tower to recover.

Eventually, Eldulis would be given the choice to stay and rehabilitate, or return to the Arbor. He chose return, too cowardly to face Lacrimosen himself, and so Inoxiam returned with him. They would be quickly cornered again, this time by a courtier with proof that Datura was a Whispers agent. Eldulis dispatched the courtier, then confronted Inoxiam for the truth. Inoxiam said he had no intention of telling Eldulis the truth; that he was his target, and none of this was meant to happen. He wasn't going to die here, but it was up to Eldulis to decide if he wanted to get himself killed for his title or not. Shockingly, Eldulis chose to call Audden for support, and the Sentinels pulled both of them back out of the Arbor and returned them to Lacrimosen's base, where he was very smug and loud about the whole thing.

Trivia
  • He doesn't remember his old face anymore. It used to feel so important to hold onto. Now it seems vague, blurry.
  • He broke Inoxiam's musicbox in a moment of anger, refusing to believe it was a gift from his twin. He found one to replace it, but it feels awkward to bring up.
  • He and Lacrimosen were almost lovers, forever ago. Now there's nothing but bad feelings between them.
  • He and Canach were close, before Eldulis' mind peeling ability began running his life. The other two survivors killed themselves at various points.
  • He feels, overall, that he's never been able to leave the room It happened in, and might never be strong enough to walk out of it. He can only hurt people and drag them in with him to be ruined alongside him.
