Ayano Aki ( 秋 彩乃, Aki Ayano) is a character appearing in Yu-Gi-Oh! VRAINS.

Design

Appearance

Ayano is a fair-skinned young woman. She has long red hair with her bangs tied on the side to a small "flower"bun, and blue eyes. Her standard attire is a uniform that consists of a slate-colored jacket with a light blue trim, which she wears over a light yellow jumper. Underneath, she has a white dress shirt with a blue tie, her heart shaped clip is tied in her hair. Ayano's uniform also includs a short black skirt, dark blue overknee socks and black court shoes.

When Ayano was younger, her hair only reached to her shoulders and her bangs were shorter, not being able to be tied. Her clothes consisted of a peach colored, sleeve long dress with black thighs underneath and black boots.

In episode 1 and 2, as Via, her hair were changed to blue, tied into a ponytail with a gold hair tie and her "flower"bun happened to end on the back of her head. Her clothes appears to be a black bodysuit with grey sleeves and gold accents around arms and her right leg and a black choker with a lapis lazuli on it. On her legs, she wears grey overknee socks and black boots.

From the end of episode 2, when the datastorn had officially returned, up to the end of the second season, her Avatar is slighty changed. Above her body she now has dark grayish-purple sleeves which cover her shoulders completly with a dark purple stone embelleshing on where the sleeves meet and her wings became bigger, rounder and slightly blueish-purple with a darker shade of the same color sprouting in the lower half area. Also her left grey socks has a now a golden strape, just like Playmaker has on his suit. The right grey socks still are decorated with the same golden rings.

By the 3rd season, her Avatar completly changed. Her hair is now open and instead of a body, she now wears a dress with a grey chest cover above it, resembling her ace monster "The Weather Painter Rainbow". The lilac stone was still kept. On her forehead and on her hip, there is now the signature sign of the Weather Painter seen. Her overknee socks changed from grey to black and her shoes matches her pastel blue dress. Instead of wings, she now has a birdtail in a blueish-purple with a darker shade of the same color sprouting in the lower half area, resembling her old wings, from her belt. Instead of flying, she now has a board to ride the datastorms.

Personality

Ayano is described as open-hearted, extroverted, friendly and helpful. However, when it comes to her loved one, she becomes quickly jealous and angry. She has some typical attitudes of a Yandere in a harmless way, trying not to show that she is jealous or angry to not putting Yusaku under any pressure of their relationship. Sometimes though, she fails to hide her feelings, becoming upset but trusts Yusaku with all of her heart anyway.

Ethymology

Ayano is a Japanese name. Depending on the Kanji, the name is written with it has different meanings. Her name is written with the Kanji for "color" (彩) the "no" (乃) is a posessive article. Her surname "Aki" (秋) means "Autumn", which make her full name meaning "autumn colors".

Abilities

Unlike her partners Yusaku and Shoichi, Ayano has no hacking abilities, but is willing to learn that. She is a strong duelist however and is one of Yusaku's strongest duel partners in Link VRAINS. She is able to use the Datastorm without a D-Board but with her wings, which she got from Ai in the first episode.

Past

Ayano grew up with Ryoken Kogami, son of Kiyoshi Kogami, and was seen as one of the Lost Incident Children before. However with a Psychologist as mother and a Lawyer as father, who also knew Ryoken and Kiyoshi, it was impossible as he would have been exposed faster than before. After the 6 were rescued, Ayano and Ryoken got separated and their friendship ended.

Approached by Ryoken Kogami/Revolver

9 ½ years after not seeing each other, Ryoken Kogami approached Ayano one day after school and wanted to recruit her for the Knights of Hanoi. For their sake of their old friendship and the ideals Ryoken told her, she agreed and became his left hand, Painter.

Duel against Unknown

As one of the Hanoi, Painter was once a foe of Unknown, thus a duel between them was unpreventable. She was able to bring out her Monsters through effects to summon her ace monster, Weather Painter Rainbow.

With her Weather Painter Deck and the Monster's effects she was able to cut out half of his Life points, however Playmaker, known as Unknown at this time, was able to destroy all the supporting magic cards and thus stopping the strong combination of her Monsters, able to quickly reducing her Life points to zero. Since Unknown's speech came through Painter, she started to doubt the ideals of the Knights of Hanoi. She started to trust him and told him who she is in real life and where he can find her.

Meeting Yusaku Fujiki/Unknown and Shoichi Kusanagi/Unnamed

After investigating Ayano from the background, he decided to approach her and left her a note, saying that they will meet in Link Vrains.

After logging in, Unknown introduces Painter and Unnamed to eachother. Unnamed, suspicious of her, decided to keep a close eye to her. As soon as Yusaku and Shoichi got the Cyberse deck, Yusaku decided to reveal himself to Ayano, bringing her then to Café Nagi to build up a basis of trust between Shoichi and Ayano as well. Little did Yusaku realize, he started to grow feelings for Ayano as well as she did for him. Shoichi and Yusaku started to program a new Link Vrains Avatar for her, naming her Via, The Virtual Intelligence of Ayano, to make her become a part of the duo.

Being pressured by Shoichi, who noticed Yusaku's growing feelings, Yusaku asked Ayano out. After several dates, he revealed his feelings to her and they became a couple. Together, they changed Unknown to Playmaker.

Present

As the story goes, Yusaku and Ayano are already dating for 2 weeks, but not showing much of their relationship in school. However, after school, they both hang out at Shoichi's van to hunt down The Knights of Hanoi with the goal to find their leader. Ayano told Yusaku all she knew about their leader, but didn't know what he plans or where to find him, promising both to help with all her might to take down the Knights.

Meeting Momoko Suzuki

Being curious about the Duel Club and jealous because of Aoi Zaizen, Ayano decided to go into a meeting with Yusaku, who is a member of this club, getting quickly into a small talk with Momoko. They became quickly friends and since Momoko was new in town, Ayano decided to show her around.

Meeting Ai and getting wings

Ayano watched Shoichi and Yusaku catching the mysterious lifeform, known as Ignis. After he set free the Datastorm for Playmaker to ride it, so he can win against the Knight of Hanoi, Ignis gave Via a pair of wings to use the Datastorm, as he sees the romantic connection between Playmaker and Via and because of another reason, which shall be revealed later. Her wings consists of the colors pastel green and pink.

Playmaker vs Blue Angel

She is often seen holding grudge against Aoi Zaizen / Blue Angel due to Yusaku's heroic side and after stalking her in order to get close to her to get Information about SOL. Yet, she was shown to be concerned as Blue Angel got possessed by Revolver, showing Ayano's caring and kind side.

Team Playmaker

She is a huge supporter of Playmaker whenever he duels, often team up with him for a tag duel. Even though he is afraid of losing her and don't want to involve her, Ayano told Yusaku that she won't let him down and support him as much as she is able to.

As Playmaker teamed up with Go and Blue Angel, Via was also a part of this group, however only dueled Knights of Hanoi, which was Playmaker's request out of worry, to clear the path for him.

Playmaker's and Revolver's last duel

After finding Revolver and his current residence, Ayano, Shoichi and Yusaku approached him and found out why the Ignis have to die. Ryoken coldheartly called Ayano a traitor for turning her back against him and being Playmaker's supporter, which quite hurt her. Playmaker and Revolver dueled, Shoichi and Ayano ran back to the van to watch the duel. She was seen to be very concerned about his loved one.

When Yusaku won and Ryoken left, Ayano comforted Yusaku at the Stardust Road, he then kissed her and they end up walking back to his home in the Night.

Ayano's jealousy

3 Months after the last duel of Playmaker and Revolver, Yusaku was working as summer job at Café Nagi, Ayano hung out at the place with him in order to go on a date later, as Aoi approached the van and thanked Yusaku for finding her unconsciousness back then with a smile, making Ayano being angry and jealous at Aoi and her growing quiet after noticing she blushed. Yusaku however reassured her that she is his girlfriend, comforting Ayano and mentioned in a vague way, what happened between them back then and telling her he loves her before he got the call from Shoichi Kusanagi.

Meeting Takeru Homura and Flame

When Yusaku returned from Link Vrains after dueling Bohman, Ayano was quite surprised but happy to see Ai again, as she truly missed her small friend.

After Shoichi returned to his truck, they wanted to find out more about the attacker who stole Jin's consciousness.Both Ayano and Yusaku promised to bring back Jin to him. At school, Takeru approached both Yusaku and Ayano and talked about the Lost Incident and Takeru told that he was also a victim, making Ayano being shocked and worried as he said he understood why Jin closed himself up.

Via's new look

Back in Link Vrains, Ai told Via that her wings are outdated and gave her a quite new look. Her wings became more cyber like and golden and her left sock now has a golden stripe on it, just like Playmaker has on his suit, which also can change the color, like her wings, depending on what summon method she uses. With these new wings, she is now capable of flying on the strongest Datastorms.

The return of The Knights of Hanoi

At the van, Shoichi showed both Yusak and Ayano the news about Kyoko Taki's escape from prison. Yusaku knew Revolver had been involved and remembered his words that he'd eventually return. Ayano, along Shoichi, counted Go, Bohman, Blood Shepherd and Revolver as their enemies, and the fight was tougher than ever.

Fake memories

With Takeru by his side, Yusaku and Ayano told Shoichi about Bohman, who apparently possessed the same memories of the Lost Incident as he did. They believed Bohman has analyzed him to have gained such memories, but the former reminded he was the only clue they had to restore Jin Kusanagi. Since the gate had disappeared, Yusaku apologized to Shoichi for lack of progress. After Shoichi revealed another cabin for Takeru, Yusaku, Ayano and Takeru himself went into Link Vrains.

Via vs The Knight of Hanoi

In order to stop the Knights of Hanoi again, Via made sure Playmaker has time for his new enemies and started to duel them once again.

Comforting Haruka

After the path was cleared for Yusaku and Takeru, Ayano returned to the van, in Yusaku's wish, to be safe and keep an eye on Shoichi and the now involved Haruka, who was revealed to be a childhood friend and became upset as she told her connection to Jin. Ayano, worried about her friend she met at the beginning of High School, comforted her and gave Haruka hope and strength to fight back in order to tell Jin how she feels.

Revolver vs Windy

Ayano, sat with Shoichi and Haruka in the van and watched the duel between Windy and Revolver. After that, all three were shocked to find out that Jin was with Lighting all the time and is used as his minion.

Declaration of war

Ayano was ready to fight in the war and promised along Haruka Shoichi to help Yusaku and Takeru getting Jin back.

Ryoken's protection program

Ryoken approached Café Nagi and gave Yusaku and Ayano a protection program, so they won't get tracked or attacked by Lightning at any case. Ayano was surprised to see Ryoken like that but was also pleased to see a glimpse of her old childhood friend in his eyes again, however, her trust in him remains small and her worry for Yusaku's future fights grew.

Searching for Aqua

Shoichi showed Ayano, Yusaku and Takeru a video of Blood Shepherd chasing Blue Girl, who had the Water Ignis. Flame believed Aqua was in trouble, and Ai urged others to rescue her and Blue Girl.

Much to Ayano's despair, Aoi became yet again a part of Team Playmaker and changed her Avatar to Blue Maiden. After following the lead to Lightning, Playmaker, Soulburner, Ghost Girl, Blue Maiden and Via watched Blood Shepherd dueling Lightning and losing, much to their shock it was revealed that he and Ghost Girl were Brother and Sister.

New Lead

Shoichi showed Takeru, Yusaku and Ayano traces of the Earth Ignis, the boys went to investigate while Ayano remained behind with Shoichi.

Deck

Ayano uses The Weather Painter Deck. Her main strategy involves getting her Ace Monster out as soon as possible and to have all the magic cards on the field to strengthen the effects of her monsters.
