Raised as a Canterlot elite, his father was incredibly scornful of him and often ignored his existence, preferring to dump him on nannies and putt him in an abusive boarding school. He once begged Princess Luna in a nightmare to get him away from his father and his abusive teachers. Luna, unable to bear the child's suffering, immediately consulted Celestia in the morning. Celestia confronted Blueblood and gave him two options: Release custody of his son to her so she could find him a more fitting parent, or be stripped of his titles and funds. He easily chose the former. Celestia immediately took Golden out of his neglectful boarding school and rehomed him to Ponyville to live with Twilight.
He was terrified of Tempest (at first) because she reminded him much of her father, but he grew to trust her in time when he often saw how her actions were out of love, not malice. Rarity reminded him too much of Canterlot ponies with her speech patterns and 'social culture', and was uncomfortable around her for a long time. He enjoyed quietly reading and writing in the castle library or occasionally in the School of Friendship's library when he had to go with Twilight to work. He was too anxious to attend any sort of public or private school, so Twilight homeschooled him for a few years until he felt comfortable enough to give the School of Friendship a try, where he met his best friends; a bat pony named Nightshade and a pegasus named Erised. Nightshade was the one who renamed him Caleas, which meant "Gentle soul" in her mother tongue.
