- She grew up going on voyages with her mother, who was a seafaring apothecary and merchant.
- On one such voyage when she was 19, she found a strange fruit while collecting herbs and berries and such for her mother. She thought it looked strange and she didn't recognize it, so she took it to her mother to ask if she knew what it was. Her mother said it was a devil fruit and that they'd be able to sell it for a lot of money and briefly explained what a devil fruit was to her.
- Shortly after, they were accosted by Buggy's crew. In a desperate bid to save herself and her mother, she ate the fruit and acquired the ability to heal people, which was immediately shown as she healed her mother's injuries that had been inflicted by the pirates. Buggy then abducted her to have as his ship's doctor.
- She was with Buggy's crew for a little over a year when they encountered Shanks' crew for the first time since abducting Bunny. She would be 20 at this point.
- There was a fight. When it became clear that Bunny was not there by choice, Shanks and his crew brought her aboard their ship with the promise of dropping her off next time they hit land. Due to Shanks mishearing her last name, Kabuni, he began calling her Bunny. Even after the misunderstanding was cleared up, the nickname stuck.
- It took some time for them to reach land again, and by then, Bunny was fond of the crew and of Shanks himself. She decided to stay with them as a healer.

- By the time One Piece begins, she'd been with Shanks and his crew for eleven years. Despite this, she still insists that she's not a pirate.

The turning point in their relationship was when he got his arm bitten off by the sea monster while protecting Luffy-- she finally admitted to herself that she loved him but she was scared that if she started dating, she might lose him, since he lives a dangerous life.
- Sometime during the next few months, he does something particularly stupid, because he used to be able to do things that he can no longer do with one arm, and he almost dies. Bunny explodes at him because she's scared for him, and admits that she loves him and doesn't want to lose him. They get together and properly and talk about their feelings.
