Benji

“I KEEP THINKIN’ I CAN SEE SOMETHING OUT THERE BUT I DON’T THINK IT WANTS TO BE FOUND”

A child whose curiosity is curbed only by the contentment of a modest life, and the fear that he can’t run fast enough.

REFERENCE GALLERY STORIES

The young Benjamin, known to his own chagrin as Benji, was a creature placated and amused–kept without much thought to those deeper things in life–by all the work he had to do. He wanted what most little boys would want: plenty of space to run and play, time in the day to get up to mischief, and, most of all, a body that was his own and not the bastardized, manifested, necromanced hell-creation he walks around in.

Resident of a colonial remnant of a ghost town and kept company only by his older brother, obligation was in no small amount. Days were full of things to do from the early hours of morning to the nightly death of the sun beneath the endless, rolling hills of...wherever he was, Benji was never sure. There were gardens to plant, wells to dig, water to fetch, weeds to pull, windows to repair, roofs to patch, game to hunt, shine to distill, and lots of holes to be dug. Maybe not clothes to repair, since the young Benji couldn’t be bothered to wear them most days, but everything else. What, or whom–if anything, and anyone–lay beyond his pastures, were largely not a concern to him.

The only times Benji could ponder such things as the outside world were in those instances his brother would leave, often for months at a time, with the intent to find some way to fix Benjamin’s plight. He’d return with gifts, but never answers, and the only thing Benji could dread more than being left alone for so long, was his brother returning, with each trip making him more restless and angry than the last. This growing unrest, and the outbursts they often brought, was frightening, and unpredictable. Soon, the simple, thoughtless Benji began to think maybe he should leave, or perhaps more accurately escape, to see what was out there that could possibly make his brother like this.

SWEET * HARDWORKING * TRUSTING

Young Benji is wild, and feral, but quick to seek comfort should any hurt be more than he could bear. He does his chores, and finds some way to be mischievous during them, but will always confess and apologize for it in the end. He’s wily and bold, but sensitive in his interactions with others: affectionate and docile should he ever be wronged, and lowly and penitent should he ever DO wrong.

FEARFUL * NAIVE * STUPID

For all of his feral, untamed sort of behavior, Benji is prone to fear, and dependent on someone to take it away. For the things he has been given permission to do, or taught how to do, he is unabashed and confident. However, he may as well be paralyzed if made to do anything he shouldn’t do, or doesn’t know how to do. Benji can, despite his youth, plant, harvest, sew, brew, cook, hunt, build, and forage, but is still hopelessly dependent on someone else to make him feel safe. He’s simple, and sees the simple beauty in life. But, he’s stupid, and taken advantage of for it.

Uncontrollable and Terrible

Benji has never been without The Eyes. Despite this, he knows deeply and viscerally that they are unnatural. In this part of his life, he is clueless as to what The Eyes are, why they surface, and how to make them go away. To him, they are a random affliction that comes and goes as it pleases. They are a curiosity to him when they aren’t there, and a terrifying disease when they are. Left alone with them, he will attempt to escape them, trying to crawl out of his skin if he has to. At these times, he seeks out his brother for comfort. Yet, as time progresses, his brother isn’t always around. Worse still, sometimes it seems as if he brings the eyes with him when he returns.

  • If drawn with body horror at this stage, he’s more likely to be afraid and distressed by it.
  • Unlikely to wear clothes at this age, but for decency’s sake, and because he is a child, cover him up in his silly little trousers please when drawing him.
  • Not cute, dare I say. Distinctly feral looking.

Shinin’: Fresh water is hard to come by in the desert, and hard to store, so moonshine is often the more viable drink option. Benji’s been a shiner from about the time he could walk. He doesn't mind it, except for when he must get the water, which usually entails running for 5 miles in the middle of a lightning storm to haul 20 gallons of flood water.

Buildin’: Living in a crumbling ghost town means there's always something to repair, be it re-shingling a roof, patching a wall, or laying a new floor. Despite the town having only two resident’s, Benji’s brother seems adamant the thing is kept from rotting to nothing.

Farmin’: Farming is mostly his brother’s task, due to his limited mobility, but at times, for lack of something better to do, Benji will help out with the weeding, the watering, and especially with the harvest.

  • WAY OF SPEAKING: Vague hints of an English accent, but in an illiterate way

  • COMMON STARTER: “Wassat?”, or more frequently: a point, grunt, or a tug on the sleeve.

  • SWEARS?:"Rotted", “Cussed”/”Cuss”, or a growl

  • QUIRKS:Parrots words and phrases and often uses them without understanding the meaning

Benji speaks in some horrible melding of "weren't" and "ain't" and pretentious Victorian english; He picks up words from his brother, and fills in the words he doesn't know with bad contractions and various grunting noises and gestures.

Strength: Brute force, as it were. Benji’s mental capabilities are… lacking, so he makes himself useful in physical tasks

Speed: Incredibly quick and with seemingly endless stamina, Benji is an errand boy by nature

Agility: When focused on a task at hand (and only then), Benji is agile and nimble

Stupidity: He doesn’t know enough to know better, or even know he should know better.

Naivety: He trusts with very little incentive; combined with his stupidity, almost any abuse against him is immediately excused and forgotten

Resistant to Change: There are a great many things Benji needs changed in his life, but if he isn't too stupid to recognize them, he's too afraid to change them. Even change for the better is met with harsh resistance. His fear and difficulty understanding the world around him makes him fiercely protective of what little slice of the world he does sort of understand, even if that little slice happens to be a razor cutting into him.

Thunderstorms: Storms are Benji’s most powerful, visceral fear–the catastrophic, whirling thunderstorms brought on by humid Midwestern nights, with tornadoes and hail and wind and rain and lightning and thunder; He is convinced, every time, that he will die.

The Eyes:

His Brother:

  • POSTURE: Confident and aware in familiar settings, hunched and timid in unfamiliar ones,

  • SMOKES/ DRUGS?: Drinks too much of the shine on occasion…

  • PHYSICAL ILLNESSES/ DISABILITIES: Gigantism–accounting for many of his physical features, and near-sightedness,

  • MENTAL ILLNESSES/ DISABILITIES: Separation anxiety of a sort, and arguable Stockholm syndrome, to a degree.

The culmination of Benji and his brother’s increasingly strained relationship was an incident in which Benji gouged out the right eye of his brother. Strangely, Benji’s own eyesight has been worse ever since.

  • Though scared of storms, Ben’s ability to cross large distances quickly makes him the ideal candidate for gathering the rainwater from the bucket traps set in the dry riverbeds dotting his land. Naturally, this has to be done before the water all washes away–a time constraint in direct conflict with Ben’s fear of the storms that send the rain down. Forced out into his worst fears, Ben finds solace when he sees the junebugs flying about, for if something so small can brave the storm, surely he can do. His affinity for them comes because with them he feels less alone even as he’s most afraid.

RELATIONSHIPS

  • RELATIONSHIP: Older Brother

  • DYNAMIC: Benji has great respect, fear, and (often undeserved) love for Dane

  • CLOSENESS: Incredibly close, sometimes so each other’s detriment

  • THEME: Hidden In the Sand - Tally Hall

Being the only other person Benji is aware exists, his closeness to Dane is indescribable. Dane, though neglectful at times, has taken on the role of being not only Benji’s brother, but also father, mother, teacher, and friend. Benji is unaware of the extent to which his older brother controls him, with his near every action being the product of some habit, routine, or expectation. All Benji is really aware of is his brother’s promise to find a way to cure the Eyes, and that when his brother leaves, this is what he has set out to do. He has such a full, blind trust in this, that any number of the inexcusable ways he is treated and taken advantage of by his brother are nonexistent and forgotten.

In day-to-day life, this hard-to-navigate fog of their (at best) unconventional patchwork family unit manifests in almost boring simplicity. “Set those over there and come help me with this” while cutting firewood, silence during the focus-intensive work of setting a windowpane, or in more wholesome moments, laughter while wrestling in the weeds or chasing coyotes over the hills.

CHARACTER NAME’S THOUGHTS ON Dane McCormick: "He g’na help me, he says he will. He’s already done it with most things. He said I’m ‘hard to teach’ but he went and done it anyways, so he’s g’na do this for me too. He says he’s all I got and I’m all he’s got, so he’s gonna go and make this all work out okay somehow.

Dane McCormick'S THOUGHTS ON CHARACTER NAME: "What is there to say about having to hold your very soul in your arms and watch it cry?"

  • RELATIONSHIP: Mother

  • DYNAMIC: N/A

  • CLOSENESS: N/A

  • THEME: N/A

Valentine–Benjamin’s mother–died before he could meet her. But, from his older brother, he’s gleaned a few things; laughter like a windchime, fingers softer than angel’s wings, and the smell of wildflowers that followed her wherever she went. Whether these were poetry lines idealized to describe a loved one lost too soon, or whether she really was such a perfect thing, is a question Ben can’t answer, but he holds perhaps some sort of fascination for them nonetheless.

CHARACTER NAME’S THOUGHTS ON Valentine Bower: "“I’ll meet her one day, that’s what he always says. I know where she is, but he won’t let me down there.”

Dane never made any mention of Benji’s father to him. Benji, ever trusting, could never want any further explanation; whether the man was simply too unremarkable to speak of, or simply didn’t exist, would lead to the same result in Benji’s mind.

“THE ABOMINATION”

“THIS IS HELL.”

The Live Forever Carnival is a place that draws in many lost souls looking for answers. It was here Benjamin experienced the first, the best, and the worst of humanity, and was left to try and discern which was which.

REFERENCE GALLERY STORIES

It is very purposeful that Benjamin ends up at the Live Forever Carnival, though that purpose is far from his own. It is here that Ben makes his first contact with the outside world; It’s the first time he's even made aware there IS an outside world, and more importantly, that there's people in it. Fearful, unadjusted, and unpredictable, Ben is at first ready to flee this newfound life of civilization. But as he's caught up in the carnival, he begins to realize that the outside world is so much worse, yet so much more wonderful and exciting, than he ever could have imagined. He finds everyone at this carnival is looking for something they hope the traveling show will be able to provide--even his stoic and unbelieving older brother seems adamant there's something to be found here--but Ben himself can scarcely want for anything, for already being so overwhelmed by the lights and the glitter and the glamor.

Living out his days in hiding and slinking around in the shadows lest he have to meet anyone face to face–but not disallowed from pulling his own weight–Ben carries props, hauls boxes, and avoids staring eyes. People frighten him, civilization bewilders him, and even the walls around him feel too close together. The only thing that could tempt him out of his isolation is the music. In the midst of a thousand new things that made no sense to him, music was something he felt that, somehow, he understood. Perhaps it was this that made him less cautious one day, and being caught up in a conversation with the Live Forever’s trombonist, Benjamin found not only a friend, but a love and passion for music. While the word “prodigy” had no meaning to him, it began to be passed around as he picked up, practiced, and played a trumpet, and before he knew it, he was out onstage playing along with the rest of the band.

This strangely pleasant newness was short lived, and in the span of a single night, and an unlocked door, Benjamin found himself the limelight of the mystical–even to the point of mythical–”Midnight shows”. He wasn’t some fake freak show attraction, but something visceral, gruesome, and real; a true, genuine, abomination. Ben came to realize that this rinky-dink little circus show had a larger audience than he’d ever imagined…an audience of the sort of people that would only let themselves be seen in the dark. It couldn't be known that this brass-playing daytime sweetheart was the same person as this thing made to prance about on the midnight stage, so the Ben that had only just begun to taste the excitement of life was masked and costumed and disheveled and dehumanized, to drive away the guilt and moral quandary that might have come from any audience member that had already fallen in love with the face and the name.

ENCOURAGING * TALENTED * WILLING

Previously nothing more than a simple, stupid farm boy, Ben now had talent, and could be looked up to–even admired–for something. Intoxicated by it all, he became overly trusting of anyone and everyone, convinced that this marvelous world could be full of only good intentions.

UNPREDICTABLE * WILLING * ERRATIC

It is the same willingness opening him up to possibility that also leads him to acting, often to his contempt, or out of ignorant innocence, like a clown, a scoundrel, a fool, and a criminal. Similarly, the anger and the violent mood swings and the mania he actively tried to keep away as a child were now being forced out of him every night, leaving him as some unstable, unpredictable version of himself.

“STOP STARING”

Ben learned at the carnival that the Eyes were not a random affliction; the carnival had found a way to bring them on at will, and so Ben learned that it was fear that did it...and anger, and shame, and embarrassment, and anything else that made his stomach churn and his blood boil and his face hot. In those few weeks when he first arrived at the carnival and was free to dance and sing and play his trumpet for the daytime shows, it was as if the eyes never existed. But when a midnight performer tried to hurt him, the Eyes came back. To Ben's confusion, and horror, they became all anyone seemed to want out of him.

  • Oodles of body horror in this arc. Eyes are the staple, but anything goes.
  • Very garish and costumed, and visibly uncomfortable with everything he’s made to wear.
  • Hard to tell in passing whether he is or isn’t actually possessed by the entirety of Hell.

Playing the Trumpet: It’s likely Ben would have been just as much of a prodigy at any instrument he picked up, but it happened that the first was a trumpet, so that's the one he stuck with. Music and rhythm felt so natural to him, unlike anything else in his life. He could, and does, sit and play for hours, alone or offstage. Some days it seems if you didn’t interrupt him, he’d play a song over and over until he keeled over dead of exhaustion.

Dancing: Although the midnight shows would have him prance and writhe about like a beast, Ben will sometimes see couples dance during the daytime shows, and try to recreate the steps himself, when he’s left alone for long enough to do so.

:

  • WAY OF SPEAKING: Ben finds himself more comfortable singing than speaking, since he can do so without stumbling over words or his own amalgamated accent.

  • COMMON STARTER: “I’s wondering…””I didn’t mean’ta…””Sorry,...”

  • SWEARS?:Adverse to it. “Heaven help me”, sometimes, but usually whispered, as if it’s a genuine plea.

  • QUIRKS:Avoids speaking; communicates largely nonverbally or not at all.

Ruthless Optimism: He can be beaten and abused and laughed at and kicked and scorned all in the span of just one show, but a kind smile of one fellow musician or audience member will preside in his mind above all the rest.

Cluelessness: Perhaps not a strength, but being unable to understand what’s happening, in some ways, makes it easier to bear.

Hopefulness: Without any reason to believe so, he’s convinced things will get better.

Unpredictability: Overwhelmed and clueless as to how to cope with the things happening to and around him, Benjamin becomes prone to outbursts of extreme fear, violence, or rage.

People Pleasing: He'll do just about anything he's told, either for fear of punishment, or because of the icky feeling he gets when he sees disappointment on people’s faces.

Ruthless Optimism: Ben doesn't understand that some people are just bad, that he's being taken advantage of, and that some things just don't change or get better

Clowns: He has good reason.

The Midnight Shows: Or, rather, the people that attend them. Dense as he may be, he knows he wouldn’t be tied up on stage if there was no audience to watch it happen.

Storms: He isn’t forced out into them anymore for survival’s sake, but you’ll find him under the bed or behind a lock door whenever thunder should roll overhead.

  • POSTURE: Hunched, beaten down, and afraid of notice or reprimand.

  • SMOKES/ DRUGS?: It’s the 20’s; he’ll ingest any substance pushed his way. He also sees dirty martinis as a food source and has suffered the consequences of it once or twice.

  • PHYSICAL ILLNESSES/ DISABILITIES: Steadily-worsening eyesight; it does him no favors in being confronted with so many new faces and trying to recognize them.

  • MENTAL ILLNESSES/ DISABILITIES: Stockholm syndrome of a sort, or maybe more accurately just a general attachment to his abusers.

Mentally and emotionally, Benjamin is an exposed nerve. But, despite everything that happens to him, not an injury, cut, or bruise will linger from one day to the next.

  • For reasons unknown, Benjamin is averse to having his hair cut or damaged in any way that would shorten it. So much so, that it seems to be his most primitive instinct to preserve it. When overwhelmed to disobedience, tying him up by his hair is often the only way to keep him in place–whether on stage, or off it, since it seems he’d rather die a thousand deaths than let one strand be severed.

RELATIONSHIPS

  • RELATIONSHIP: Ringmistress

  • DYNAMIC: Ben wants to please her, but isn’t really sure why

  • CLOSENESS: Close but tenuously–a conditional closeness

  • THEME: Welcome to the Circus - Skittish

Zahra’s interest was still in Benjamin’s older brother, Dane, when Ben tailed him to the carnival; Ben was, if anything, a new development in Dane’s involvement, and hardly a person of his own. When Ben began to play trumpet for her daytime shows, she showed a certain displeasure towards him, much to his confusion–it was as if she didn’t like having her back turned to his daytime exploits while she focused on his older brother’s midnight ones. When a certain midnight performer of hers brought the unfortunate Benjamin before her, stripped both physically and of the facade of normalcy, Ben–or perhaps more accurately, what The Eyes made him–became Zahra’s only care in the world, and all else was pushed to the wayside.

Benjamin, very quickly, began to realize that it was as if he was owned by the carnival, and by its workers. A people pleaser by nature, he is consistently put out by Zahra’s frequent, and often unexplained and unexpected, displeasure with various things he may say and do. He walks on eggshells to try and avoid this, and more importantly, tries to figure out what does seem to make her happy. Through trial and error, to his sickened displeasure, he discovers that the only thing that seems to please her is becoming the most grotesque, inhuman, and depersonalized version of himself he can be.

Benjamin’S THOUGHTS ON Zahra Zamfir: "She's the boss lady. S'what the others call her, and we have t'do what she says. Huh? No, I ain't know why... Less says it's 'cause she 'runs this shit show' but I don't know what that means. Me? Well, I like her... I think I do, when she's happy with me anyways.

Zahra Zamfir'S THOUGHTS ON Benjamin: "Imagine it, someone–something–truly unique, as we all want to be. Just as we all, deep down, want to be shocked, disturbed, horrified, and at the same time, justified, and comforted by the skin we walk in. Whatever he is, he is an experience more primal to us than anything else we long for."

Eden was the one who first discovered the Eyes, and therefore felt he had earned some right to some part of Ben…somehow. Being a quack doctor and possessing an unnatural affinity for aberration of any kind, but unable to overpower Ben by any physical means, Eden resorted to mind games–a sort of ongoing, philosophical debate, in which he discovered he could make Ben do just about anything he wanted by merely explaining why he must, in ways and words that Ben couldn’t understand, much less refute.

Ben knows the things Eden does and the way he speaks are wrong, uncomfortable, and frightening, but he can’t refute him on any intellectual or moral grounds, and so he does his best to grit his teeth and bear it. Whereas Zahra may adore his abhorrent, inhuman, freakish self because of the tickets he sells and the crowds he draws in, Eden seems to be in visceral adoration of these grotesqueries themselves, which Ben can’t understand, and can hardly ponder for how it disturbs him

Benjamin’S THOUGHTS ON Eden Boucher: "He's… well he… I guess we’s… we both go out there on the stage, so I guess we’s got something alike in us. But I don’t think he’s very like me at all.

Eden Boucher'S THOUGHTS ON Benjamin: ":)"

  • RELATIONSHIP: Bandmate

  • DYNAMIC: Ben is wholly unaware of the seething hatred Whip has for him

  • CLOSENESS: Both men would give different answers

  • THEME: Prince Nez - Squirrel Nut Zippers

For the most part, their relationship is seething malice and jealousy that Ben isn't aware of. Whip is timid, shy, awkward, quiet, and full of pent-up angst and bitterness because of it. Already treated as a tagalong to his charismatic and extroverted friend Cecil, having Ben added to their little musical mix pushed Whip even further into obfuscation, and led to him despising the man. In addition, Whip's lifelong bad habit of refusing to search for love within his own realm of possibility and consistently falling hard for the most out-of-his-league woman within a thousand miles of him, eventually lead him to pining for their ringmistress, Zahra. Her increase in affection and attention towards Ben made Whip's needless hatred all the more intense, though rarely manifested in much more than a cold stare.

Ben is completely unaware of all of this. He’s amenable enough towards Whip and doesn't notice or understand the quiet hostility he's met with, especially after being so well received by Whip’s counterpart, Cherry. A part of Ben fears that because Whip–a midnight performer–knows about the Eyes, his reaction is because of them, and that if Cherry should find out, he would become the same way.

Benjamin’S THOUGHTS ON “Whip” Eisenhower: "Whip? Sure, we's friends… ‘quainces, ‘least. Why you say it like that? He ‘got here first’, he says, so I been watchin’ him.

“Whip” Eisenhower'S THOUGHTS ON Benjamin: "We are not friends, and I don't think I'm obliged to talk to you about it. I don't care how good he's supposed to be, it's cheating is what it is, thinking he can just lead the band now, without a lick of practice. He comes in, picks up his trumpet, drowns us all out, takes all of the applause, then does it all again the next day. What's to like about him? He's loud, he's irritating, his pants rise over his ankles, and I don't think he's ever washed that hair of his a day in his life. Some of us have worked hard to be where we are. Me, I did. He didn't…But I told you I don't want to talk about it."

Quite unlike his friend Jacob, Cecil accepted Ben as a friend almost immediately, as if they'd known each other their entire lives. Though friendly to everyone, Cecil seems to be naturally drawn to the more awkward and socially inept individuals. Perhaps the only friendly face at the carnival, he helped Ben to come out of his shell, and even became the reason he became a musician. A prospective musician himself, Cecil was quick to marvel at Ben's talent, informally inviting him to the future band he dreams about starting. Probably nothing more than an overly-polite comment made in passing, but to Ben it was a promise, and one he couldn't get out of his head.

Cecil never really intended, nor knew the impact he had on Benjamin, but without him, Ben wouldn't have known there was a good thing in the world; Cecil believed in big, wonderful things, and his attitude and optimism was infectious to Ben, who decided he was going to hope for a future he couldn't yet see. The man talked so on-end about his (alleged) incredible, beautiful fiancé, his glittering future as a musician traveling the world, and the wonderful summer Georgia nights back home. The rest of the carnival was weary of this talk, but to Ben it was the only glimmer of hope he had in his dark, dark place.

Benjamin’S THOUGHTS ON “Cherry” Farley: "He says we's going to go all 'round the world one day, playing music in all sorts of places…and I believe him. He knew I could play this here trumpet real good, so I think he knows that one day things are goin' to get a whole lot better.

“Cherry” Farley'S THOUGHTS ON Benjamin: "Ben? What a crazy mutt that guy is! I got a thing for those kind of boys, you know, those antisocial country types. You latch on to ‘em and get the feeling they’d follow you right to the end of the world, and I think I’d follow ‘em right back."

  • RELATIONSHIP: Brother

  • DYNAMIC: Ben struggles to trust him, and at times resents him

  • CLOSENESS: Incredibly close, to their detriment

  • THEME: Trou Macacq - Squirrel Nut Zippers

Dane believes that there is more to the name “Live Forever” than Zahra and her loyalists are letting on. Ben showing up wasn’t something he’d expected, or at first wanted, but his arrival produced an opportunity; to scrounge and pry into the carnival’s history, Dane needed Zahra’s eyes off of him, and onto something else. Ben proved to be this perfect scapegoat, and so in a decision that Dane can only pray Ben might forgive him for, he decided to sacrifice Ben to the midnight shows. Quietly, he steps aside, while Ben is made into a wild animal for the amusement and pocket change of city rabble. He must play his part too, performing for the crowd, and never letting Ben escape this fate he’s been given.

Ben knows none of this; to him, the brother he’s trusted for protection and comfort all of his life, has suddenly turned into one of his abusers, or at least turned a cold shoulder. Ben knows–because he’s been told–that Dane is trying to help him, to take away the horrors that are the reason he’s onstage in the first place, but he cannot fathom how, and Dane disregards any attempt to try and explain.

Benjamin’S THOUGHTS ON Dane McCormick: "I don’t understand, heaven help me to understand…

Dane McCormick'S THOUGHTS ON Benjamin: "All I can hope to console myself with is the prayer that I will be able to explain one day, and that I will be able to make it up to him. And, if I never can, I can only hope he will consider my own decay punishment enough for the things I have done."

Less is removed from either loving or hating, or liking or disliking, Ben. He largely tries to ignore the kid, just as he does with everyone else. Ben tries to observe him from afar, and occasionally ask him a question or two, but Less just seems to treat him like he isn't there him. Yet, sometimes if Ben dares glance back during the midnight shows, the man looks almost… sorry. Some part of Ben wonders, daydreams, or maybe even hopes, that the man will stand up for him one day. But that probably will never happen.

Benjamin’S THOUGHTS ON Leslie Fischer: "I see him lookin’ at me sometimes, but he won’t ever let me get no closer. I think he’s got things to say to me, but he won’t say ‘em."

Leslie Fischer'S THOUGHTS ON Benjamin: "It’s not any of your damn business… but I hope things get better for him."

Cricket is just that: a wriggling little pest that’s too quick to catch and hard to get rid of. As such, the Live Forever Carnival members tend to take hesitant turns making sure he doesn’t get into too much trouble. Though perhaps not the most responsible of the bunch, Ben seems to be the only one that can wrangle the hyperactive, bayou-bred imbecile that is the young Jean Louis. Ben is the only one that can seem to catch or restrain the boy, for one, but also the only one that can seem to distract him for any length of time, and the only one that can seem to understand what little discernible English he can manage to speak. As such, the rest of the carnies decided they’d let Cricket tag along, so long as Ben could manage him. Cricket doesn’t hold much thankfulness, but does at least acknowledge Ben is the least likely to send him back to the orphanage he escaped from.

Benjamin’S THOUGHTS ON Cricket Jean Louis: "They done named him right, that’s all I know. I don’t know what all good I can do with ‘im, but I’m tryin’ to teach him what I know."

Cricket Jean Louis'S THOUGHTS ON Benjamin: "Couillon! Soeur Caroline wouldn’t like him, so mon frère Benjamin is alright wit me!"

“Big Ben”

BUT IT’S MORE THAN JUST A SOUND, IT’S WHAT MAKES US ALL HUMAN, AND IT’S WHAT MAKES LIFE ALRIGHT.

The storm breaks into sunshine and Benjamin wants only to reflect it, chasing the darkness away even if he must become the sun himself

The crazy dreams of a sweet little southern boy become Ben’s very salvation, and he wakes up in a land of sultry summer nights and music playing on every street corner. Offered the opportunity to escape his life as a carny and start a new one as a musician, Benny finds himself, for the first time, free: free from the family farm, free from his brother, free from the Live Forever Carnival, free from Zahra and the midnight shows, and free from the clown in the closet. Frightened by this new independence, but now in arms with newfound friends, he starts his career as a trumpet player for the Runaways–the band formed and led by carnival companion Cecil Farley.

The Runaways begin their career as inexperienced, starry-eyed dreamers playing at any venue that’d have them, with Benny serving as the undying flame burning away any and all encroaching fog. After a stint of floundering in good intentions, a mentor for the Runaways comes in the form of a man named Ambrose Zamfir–a bassist with some fame to his name, and a gentle, humble disposition. While Benjamin experiences the world with his friends, he learns about it from Ambrose, who becomes his north star in his journey away from the carnival.

For the first time in his life, Benjamin can allow himself to feel and to believe he is normal: just another human being, chasing dreams and living life. The world is new to him, and it becomes his mission to make others see it so wonderfully as he does, by all means of music, song, and dance; he vows to preach a gospel of light and warmth through brass and wire.

HARDWORKING * OPTIMISTIC * ENCOURAGING

Ben recognizes the opportunities he has been given and holds onto them with an iron grip. There’s no obstacle or hardship that will slow him down, and he’s determined to not let those he cares about be slowed down either, even if he has to carry them through.

NAIVE * IGNORANT * OVERZEALOUS

For all his hope and persistence, Ben is hopeful and optimistic beyond possibility. He’s a freight train of good intention hurtling towards the brick wall of reality. Though content and happy with what he’s managed to make for himself, he still strives for better things, out of the naive belief that his life is now one steady incline towards bigger and better things.

GONE.

Maybe a few times–in moments of doubt, conflict, or in those few moments after waking from a nightmare–the Eyes would return. But save for these instances so few and far between Benny could hardly be bothered by them, they were gone. The lifelong pursuit to find some supernatural way to cure his body of this affliction now meant nothing to him, for now he was free; loved and admired for talent, for himself. He was human, not because he’d suddenly been resurrected as one, but because he loved, and believed, and strived for better things.

  • Very little body horror during this time in his life, save during his worse moments.
  • Is at last given clothes custom made to fit him, and no longer looks agonized by the concept of being dressed.
  • Absolutely emanates a joyous, friendly, and unquenching stupidity.

Music: Music may be Ben’s profession, but it consumes most of his waking hours. Whenever time allows, he’s rehearsing, writing arrangements, or some days, listening to the gramophone in the parlor.

Handiwork: Decades of being a farm hand equipped Ben for earning a little bit of cash (not to mention influence) by doing various construction or landscaping tasks around the wealthy neighborhood he spends most of his days in.

Socializing: The many parties Ben finds himself attending after shows become opportunities for him to talk to people from all walks of life, asking questions to just about anyone who will answer them.

  • WAY OF SPEAKING: Loud and confident when he knows, or thinks he knows, how to pronounce everything, and a little bit more hesitant when he doesn’t

  • COMMON STARTER: "Hey, you!" “Where you from?” “Sun is shinin’!”

  • SWEARS?:“Goodness” is about as vulgar as he goes. “Heaven(s no)(help me)” if he’s serious

  • QUIRKS:Overly-loud without intending to be, as if he forgets when he’s offstage

Despite his reservations about his speech and his past, he is a genuine enjoyer of conversation of all types, and will typically talk to anyone about anything for as long as they’ll put up with him.

Amenability: Ben knows no strangers, only potential friends. He’s dense enough for rejection to bounce off of him, and friendly enough to try his luck with anyone.

Music : Unlike most other technical things, music and jazz theory is about as natural to Ben as breathing, and he has no trouble composing, reworking, and improvising to the whims of any crowd.

Work Experience: The number of hats Ben has worn over the years makes him well suited for any number of favors, whether your roof is leaking, a window needs replaced, or perhaps you need a song written in a different key.

Overbearing: Ben is a smothering, unyielding individual, and has difficulty knowing when he’s being too much of anything: loud, friendly, talkative, or otherwise. He struggles being quiet and polite, and makes a fool of himself in situations that demand him to be so.

Anxious alone: He functions very poorly when left alone for too long. He’s merely outrun and tried to forget past traumas, so when he’s left alone to remember then, they tend to creep up and try to overwhelm him.

Knowing: He knows the things he’s done, he knows the measures taken to escape the Carnival, and he knows that there’s every chance those things will catch up to him. Much of his hatred of being alone, of being bored, is because it gives him the time to ponder the realities that he does not want to ponder.

Losing: Ben is afraid that he will lose all of the things he’s finally managed to gain. Though giddy with his new independence, Ben fears that the sway people have over him will be used against him one day, to take away all he has.

His brother: He made a deal with the devil and now he doesn’t know when it will be made good.

Clowns:

  • POSTURE: Confident and upright; friendly and inviting

  • SMOKES/ DRUGS?: Smokes when others do, as more of a social activity, but never alone. Same for drinking, and tends to drink in the moderation that those around him are drinking in

  • PHYSICAL ILLNESSES/ DISABILITIES: Incredibly poor eyesight

  • MENTAL ILLNESSES/ DISABILITIES: PTSD of a sort, and a strange longing for the people that have hurt him

He’s learned to recognize people more by voice/sound, due to having extreme difficulty discerning physical details and facial features.

  • Though from people and places that bring bad memories, Ben kept all the jewelry that was given to him at the carnival; he’s never thrown a gift away. This astonishing amount of accessories became something of a staple of his appearance, and soon fans began gifting him more and more—new, old, costume, or family heirloom. He eventually amasses more than any human could ever wear at once, but he keeps it all.
  • Ben has no semblance of a sleep schedule and tends to go long periods of time without rest. When he decides maybe he ought to hit the hay, he does so, regardless of circumstance–usually someone’s deck party at a house he’s never been to; he sleeps in all manner of places: beneath tables, on chairs, outdoors, in other people’s beds, the possibilities are endless. The closest to romance he’s ever achieved is accidentally inviting the unwitting flapper “to bed” and proceeded to be asleep on a banister in less than three minutes.

RELATIONSHIPS

”Are you coming with us?” was as eloquent of an offer as Benjamin received to join the Runaways as, well, a runaway, but those few words changed his life. They were a fire escape window in the darkest part of hell, and he didn’t dare waste his chance for a second. Cecil himself was friendly to Ben–nothing remarkable–but to Ben he was everything and more. Ben was never eloquent enough himself to ever express his thanks, and Cecil never expected anything in return for his kindness, so their friendship is one that sees no need for any sort of vocal confirmation of their gratitude and companionship.

Socialites by nature, it isn’t often they spend time alone, or are discernable as close friends in a crowd at all. In the few times when gigs are sparse and the others in their circle have reservations, their time is spent not in meaningful conversation, but in storytelling, laughter, and rehearsal for their next appearance together onstage.

Ben’S THOUGHTS ON “Cherry” Farley: "He’s uh… he’s good. I ain’t know how else I’m s’pose to describe him, he’s so good. He’s good at that horn he’s got and he’s good with all them people and he’s good to me and he’s just…good. A good man.

“Cherry” Farley'S THOUGHTS ON Ben: "What a cat! That guy’s something else, and I owe it to him, this ol’ crowd I got. You ever just meet someone and get that feeling you were supposed to meet ‘em? That’s me and him, I just know we was s’posed to cross paths, and boy am I glad we did."

”Walk with me” was the phrase that began Ben’s tentative friendship with Jacob–a man who was only beginning to come to terms with his long and unwarranted hatred of the oblivious trumpet player. Ben’s persistence–mostly ignorant but at times purposeful–in being kind to Jacob, every so slowly made a small dent in his shining metal suit of self-loathing and hatred, bringing the him ever so slightly to his senses and aware of the fact that maybe he shouldn’t treat Ben, others, or even himself this way. Though not the ideal confidant, Jacob proposed something like an apology, and an explanation, to the mostly-confused Benjamin. Being the first time Benjamin had ever been willingly initiated into a conversation of substance, trying to get anything through to him was a feat in itself, but after a long while, Jacob seemed convinced that his suspicion of Ben wasn’t necessary; the man was too painfully stupid, painfully innocent in this regard, to have any ulterior motives for being so friendly.

Unlike Ben and Cecil’s relationship, which manifests boldly and loudly to all passersby, Jacob and Ben’s friendship isn’t exactly evident to the bystander; the former is still stuck in a shell, and the latter is patiently, but persistently, trying to coax him out of it. Benjamin is to Jacob a dare to live more boldly, and a reminder that he doesn’t need to live as something he despises. Jacob is to Benjamin a pause in the chaos of their life in the fast lane, and an exercise in peace and quiet, conversation and contemplation. Ben is, in his lack of social graces, the only one not content to let Jacob sulk himself and his self-loathing to an early grave.

Ben’S THOUGHTS ON Jacob Eisenhower: "He’s gonna come around one day, I know he is. He’s one of them uh, tough hoes to crack…row….no…I don’t ‘member how Cherry done said it but he’s one of them. We’re gonna get better, him and me. He’s g’na help me figure things out, and I’m g’na get him to smile here one of these days.

Jacob Eisenhower'S THOUGHTS ON Ben: "I was taking the easy way out at first, you know? Deathbed confession to a brick wall. But the more I talk to him, the more I start to think maybe he understands what I’m saying. Now, maybe he knows too much… but it’s more peace to me than nobody knowing nothing at all. Hell, maybe he’s real and I’m taking him for cardboard. At any rate, I finally understand why it was supposed to be him in those stage lights, and not me."

  • RELATIONSHIP: Mentor

  • DYNAMIC: Ben is very appreciative of Ambrose, to the point of being afraid that perhaps he’s too good to be true

  • CLOSENESS: Ambrose feels very familiar to Ben, but he doesn’t know much about him.

  • THEME: Accentuate the Positive - Perry Como

Ambrose is the first to be truly willing to teach Ben, and to guide and mentor the admittedly lost and confused soul in his brand new world. Ben seems to soak in every word Ambrose says, to the point of reverence at times. In the past, putting this sort of blind faith in someone usually ended with Ben being taken advantage of, but with Ambrose, his friendship was genuine, as was his advice and concern; he wasn’t some snake oil salesman trying to exploit Ben for his dimwitted self is worth.

Ben believes Ambrose knows more than he’s letting on, but does his best to trust that there is a reason for it. He feels almost as if Ambrose knows about where he came from, or who exactly he is. But, for fear of delving into what may be only a mist, or, worse, finding out truths he may not want to know, Ben makes no mention of these things.

Ben’S THOUGHTS ON Ambrose Zamfir: "I use’t think that Dane knew all there was to know, an’ then I thought Zazi did too… but I was wrong about them. I don’t think I’m wrong about Ambrose though, I really do think he knows all them things he says he knows, and I think he’s all that he says he is. Maybe he even knows something about me.

Ambrose Zamfir'S THOUGHTS ON Ben: "No, it wasn’t any accident that brought me to Ben. I know it isn’t my responsibility to repair him–he isn’t an object–but if I can encourage him to reason and to believe, rather than only accept, I think I will have done some good in the world."

Missy is the guardian angel of the Runaways and their hopeful start. Heiress of a southern fortune and community patron of literature and finance, she was quick to provide a home for the aspiring musicians in her spacious Georgian home, while acknowledging their desire to be self-made, and not have their fame purchased for them. Immediately, she knew Ben was what Cecil’s dreams of grandeur had been missing, and she saw in him the beating heart of the Runaways. Ben, still fresh out of the freak-shaped box the carnival had stuffed him into, was at first hesitant to blossom into his new freedom and opportunity. So frequently condemned for being his own self, Missy was quick to encourage him to come into his own, endeared by the moments the beaten-down Ben let his true colors show.

To Ben, Missy is family. He won’t be told otherwise. She’s one of the few to be so openly and genuinely proud of his every accomplishment, and it seems the only thing Ben could possibly be more excited about than getting to travel the world to play music, is getting to come home to Missy after days or weeks on the road.

Ben’S THOUGHTS ON Missy Dawson: "Ms. Dawson’s the most best person I done ever met in all my life, ever, and I ain’t ever think I’m g’na meet no one better!

Missy Dawson'S THOUGHTS ON Ben: "Oh he’s only the sweetest little boy I’ve ever set these eyes of mine on… though I suppose he’s not all that much of a little boy is he? Ah, I suppose not. But aw, hell, let him be–why not? He’s a darling, I say let that boy dream on as long as this world will let him, and longer!"

  • RELATIONSHIP: Bandmate

  • DYNAMIC: Perhaps not brotherly…maybe cousins that cause more problems than they fix

  • CLOSENESS: Friendly, maybe not particularly close

  • THEME: Man With the Hex - The Atomic Fireballs

Without fully realizing it, Ben sees Cricket as a younger version of himself, and instinctively wants to protect him from all the things Ben was taken advantage of for, despite Cricket being far more savvy than Ben ever was or will be. Ben has found in Cricket an unusual confidant, after certain events that took place during the carnival. Cricket–the only Runaway fully privy to the nature of Ben’s true condition–made a promise in childhood ignorance to aid in the search for a cure. Ben is appreciative, if not skeptical, but will at least be content to have someone who knows what he is, and isn’t afraid.

!!DISCLAIMER!! This arc was created as a filler/transition arc, and that is still the purpose it serves. I have intentions to add some substantial plot/more characters, but I would like the lore to develop naturally, and as necessary, rather than forcing it. As such, a lot of this part of the profile will be unfinished and pretty bare bones; I only plan to explain the very gist of it.

All good things must come to an end. Such is the case for the Runaways. Though the band’s bittersweet demise was not all the product of bad things, Ben struggles the most in moving on. Unlike his companions, he seems frozen in time, mentally, emotionally, even physically. Getting drafted at the advent of the war was almost welcomed by him, as it was at the very least an end to a purposeless drifting. But war brings tragedy, and in his case, tragedy in the death of a friend he hadn’t gotten to say goodbye to.

Ben realizes, in this time, what he had already known: He is not human, he is not alive. A desperate search for answers, an aimless search for death, and finally, a violent and cynical darkness mark his time spent overseas. By the time he returns, he’s long outlived everyone he’s ever cared about, and exhausted himself of any hope that he’ll ever join them.

The Psychic

A man of experience and long life, with stories to tell and treasures to showcase; a shiner, a farmer, a brother, a performer, a musician, an abomination, an attraction, a friend, a soldier, a villain, a killer, a hoarder, and everything in between

REFERENCE GALLERY STORIES

Faded and without anything to show for all his decades of searching, an older Ben settles into the truth that he always was, and always will be, the abomination. Even with the advent of the 21st century, Ben feels left behind in the past–even more out of place. With no more dreams to chase and no more nightmares to wake from, he drifts towards anywhere familiar, digging up his past belongings and settling in for a long, long life of nothing. No longer running from his own nature, and no longer being beholden to it, he finds a purposeless sort of existence as a cheap roadside psychic, gaining brief interactions and maybe a few bucks from the flickering, spectral apparitions he can sense around passersby.

Chance meetings with two astonishingly familiar total strangers bring Ben out of an endless purposelessness, and back into the pursuit of a cure. Only this time, there’s something tangible to look for–something, someone, long since buried and lost; the secret to resurrection, and an insisting that Ben is somehow the key to it. With the promise of understanding being so close, Ben can’t resist the temptation of answers; First the carnival, then the war, and finally, digging up graves.

The rest of the story is some amalgamation of spoilers and grossly undeveloped and nonsensical lore, and I won’t make us all cringe by trying to explain it or trying to pretend it’s cool. Take your guesses as to what happens (it’s as good as mine).

NOSTALGIC * EXPERIENCED * APOLOGETIC

Harboring a lot of regrets, Ben is appreciative of his former days, and wishes he had been able to appreciate them more while he was living them. Having gained experience in things of all kinds, good and bad, he mourns the chances he squandered.

JADED * UNPREDICTABLE * BITTER

Ben sees the good old days as over, and is unwilling to try to relive them, or enjoy his time now. He’s haunted by a great many things, sometimes overcome by them. Rather than acclimate, he’s chosen isolation.

A Part of Me

After a lifetime of a continuous battle with The Eyes, Ben has finally settled on compromise, or maybe even exhaustion. Losing hope of ever being free from this part of himself has led him to a weary acceptance; he is not controlled by them any longer, but no longer does he attempt to peel them away.

  • The Eyes are almost a perpetual presence at this point, even if as minimally as a third eye on his forehead
  • Dresses the part of the kitschy roadside psychic
  • Beaten down and tired, but with a knowing sort of look about him

Hoarding: Ben’s never thrown a thing away. At least, not something given to him, whether given intentionally or not. He obsessively goes through his collections of things, trying to scrape any ounce of memory or sensation he can from them, good or bad.

Psychic readings: Far from a profession, calling himself a psychic is merely an excuse to hole up in a dilapidated building and a way to fill time.

Music: Though he doesn’t play anything himself anymore, he’ll listen to music on records or old radios.

  • WAY OF SPEAKING: Quiet and muted, hardly a speaking tone.

  • COMMON STARTER: “Yes?” “Come in” “Hello”

  • SWEARS?:“Oh, heaven” “Heavens no” “Heaven help me”

  • QUIRKS:Often leaves sentences unfinished;trails off

Quiet and reserved most of the time, but unbearably loud when he’s angry/startled

HOPE: Even when he thinks he’s lost it, it always comes back to flatten him in the end. The littlest spark ignites it, and even long after it extinguishes, it smolders.

UNDERSTANDING: More specifically, the desire to understand himself, others, and the world around him.

MEMORY: Ben hoards memories as much as he hoards objects. He can recall seemingly anything perfectly, almost as if he can truly relive things in his head.

APATHY: His nonchalance towards any situation’s outcome leaves him unpredictable at best, and reckless and destructive at worst.

REACTIVITY: As a result of the things he’s done and the things he’s been through, he doesn’t take well to unexpected or unpleasant situations, and reacts harshly.

REGRET:

Storms: The fear he can’t shake

Clowns: The person he’d like to forget

The unexpected: The future he doesn’t want

  • POSTURE: Hunched over and distracted; ambling

  • SMOKES/ DRUGS?: Smokes and drinks on occasion, but not really a habit

  • PHYSICAL ILLNESSES/ DISABILITIES: Nearsightedness

  • MENTAL ILLNESSES/ DISABILITIES: PTSD

Unusually physically affected by his mood: in moments of excitement or happiness, he appears much younger, and in opposite moments, much older.

RELATIONSHIPS

Ben sees in Adam a supernatural connection with his past, and in a less transcendental sense, a virgil-esque guide in his assimilation into modernity. Adam–an extremely paranoid and delusional ex-junkie with a criminal record–sees the strange, many-eyed Ben as an angel sent to punish him for his crimes (in both a metaphorical and very literal sense, depending on the day). Though, Ben can hardly be said to “punish” Adam as much as annoy and infuriate him, following him around and asking a myriad of strange questions. While Adam becomes an incidental in the grave-digging quest for rebirth, Ben seems focused on him in such mundane things as his hobbies and interests.

At the heart of things, Adam is completely unsure whether he hates having this clingy creature around, or if things would go back to being too quiet and lonely without him. Considering himself the most unremarkable of people, he struggles to comprehend Ben’s fascination and perseverance with his mundane life.

Ben’S THOUGHTS ON Adam: "“I don’t know how or why, but it’s the whole world, and then me and this stranger. But maybe he isn’t no stranger at all.”

Adam'S THOUGHTS ON Ben: "“Man, I tell you I’m either so screwed in the head I’m making this guy up, or I’m not screwed up and…and then I don’t even know what to do with that.”"

Noah is so clearly out of his mind that Ben maintains reservation about anything the man would have him do. If it weren’t for a gut feeling, Ben would dismiss him altogether. But Ben feels led, somehow, to believe Noah is telling the truth, and to aid him in his search. This instinct is usually in direct conflict to Noah’s brashly self-destructive behavior, and complete, distinct lunacy.

Ben’S THOUGHTS ON Noah: "“Somehow, he knows. Somehow, I’ve got to keep him alive.”

Noah'S THOUGHTS ON Ben: "“You want to know? Keep sticking your nose places, but don’t be surprised when you get hit.”"
