When he was young, he came down with Swamp Fever and was slowly cured part of the way through the fourth and final stage of the disease when a colony of Flash Bees built their nest in his tree trunk.
He gained his cutie mark when he generated magic through photosynthesizing. Even to this day, he sees this miracle as his destiny and refuses to ingest any more Flash Bee honey.

Nowadays, he works as a botanist in Canterlot, studying magic on the side. He's even learned to give himself temporary wings! How fun!
