Howl will do whatever it takes to save his own skin. He speaks his mind, loyal to those he trusts. He isn’t shy about killing or manipulating to get what he wants or needs. He holds little sympathy for others, taking on a more antisocial personality. If he was cast out by his own family, then why should he care for others?
In Howl’s home world, he was born in a small kenku clan. From birth his parents knew he was different. His eyes weren’t black like the rest, they had red pupils that would glow. He said he saw things that no one else would see. For the 2 years he lived with them, he was shunned, other kenku children would not play or speak to him. His own father would ignore him as much as possible. His mother loved him, cherished him up until the point of his banishment.
At the age of 2 (6-10 human years) he was banished from his birth planet. And ended up where he is today. Confused and alone. From the time he arrived, he no longer saw things.
Being so young, alone and confused. Howl then turned to thieving to get by, traveling from place to place. Picking up odd jobs here and there working for the underground thiefs.
He was looked down upon for who he was, a Kenku. He spoke in broken common, mimicking whatever he heard to communicate properly until he understood common himself.
During one of his jobs, Howl was seriously injured by a creature. It’s sharp claws racking down his face, his eye being lost in the process. It left him with a gnarly scar from the top of his eye socket down to his cheek. This is how he came to become a bard in the college of horror.
The scar disgusted people, scared people. He would use it to his advantage. From then on he wore the mask of a dead kenku he bought in the dark market.
Eventually, he spotted the “outsiders”, followed them for a while before being caught and joining their crew.
