Profile

Role in Story

The MC for White Rose. Guinevere was a rather close friend of Miranda’s in college while she was an undergrad, and when the two met again in town, Miranda offers Guin a job as her groundskeeper.

In White Rose, after both sides of her family treat her like a leech and blame her for being unmarried with no discernible income despite her running ragged to help both of the family businesses, Guin finally has enough and takes Miranda up on her offer to be a live-in groundskeeper and hostler at Grimm’s Keep. There, she realizes she’s been involved in the process of introducing aliens to the world, including the commander’s nephew, Or’Yuhenal.

Goal

To find herself again after years of use and abuse by her family.

To never allow herself to be walked all over again, or be controlled with “love” or “family” as an excuse.

Family

FatherGavin Eldridge
MotherAurora Eldridge
Elder BrotherArthur Eldridge
Elder SisterElaine Eldridge

Physical Description

5’ 10” and curvy af with muscles. Strong body that came from work, not working out. Short, white, curly hair (3A type), pink eyes with pale pupils. Extremely pale all over. Always in oversized super-dark sunglasses and an oversized hat. Dresses to cover everything because of her sensitive skin.

Personality

Resilient. Patient. Flexible and open-minded, optimistic. A true neutral sort, with an edge for good. The type to accept the world’s evils as they are, and occasionally extend a helping hand when it suits her to either side. Sees equal good in both life and the rot that follows. Has a philosophic bent.

Prone to blaming herself for everything, because she has always been blamed for everything. Thinks very poorly of herself because her family always tended to see her in the worst light. Reclusive. Quiet. Doesn’t open up easily. Tends to intimidate people because of her quiet nature, all-too-striking looks, and occasionally imposing aura.

Occupation

Perpetual Part-timer

Botanist

Groundskeeper, Landscaper, and Hostler for Miranda Fousend

Habits/Mannerisms

Never goes outdoors without an absolutely massive hat and pitch-black sunglasses. Since she has to overdress for protection, Beatrix helped her learn how to own her looks with a mix of Beatnik and Old Hollywood Glam.

Likes to wear dark colors despite how pale she is.

Has a small philosophic bent, and likes learning about pantheons of gods from around the world since those pantheons reflect a culture’s philosophy the things their gods represent.

Can easily block out the entire world around her when she’s focused on something.

Takes sleep very seriously, as it is the “growth period” when things are allowed to rest. Guin invests in her sleep the way some people invest in their hobbies.

Guin likes that roses are very “talkative” as far as floriography goes, but she actually qualifies how much she likes a flower by how useful it is. Roses are still very useful, but she also likes violets and dandelions.

Background

Her family has always been into growing things. What originally started as a farm turned into a landscaping business, and her father married the only daughter of the town’s only florist. Guinevere was born the youngest of three, and with no chance—Elaine had already become the house princess, and got whatever she wanted. And Guinevere became their defective child.

Born with albinism, her mother Aurora found Guin’s red eyes so disconcerting she couldn’t even stand to breastfeed her. Guin’s care largely fell to Gavin, who likewise had a hard time coming to love a child who didn’t particularly look like either of them. He secretly had a paternity test done when he took Guin in for one of her checkups, but she was definitely their child. Knowing that Guin was his child for sure sealed the deal for Gavin, but frustrated his relationship with his wife, as he came to terms with how she was seriously neglecting their youngest. This relationship would never recover—not between husband and wife, nor between mother and youngest daughter. Guin knows about this, as her father has spoken to her about it when she asked.

With Arthur slated to take over the landscaping business, and Elaine in line for the florist shop, Guinevere spent a long time trying to figure out her future. Chasing her mother’s love and her father’s approval often meant bowing to Elaine’s whims, and trying to appeal to all three resulted in working with plants. Despite her uncomfortable family life, Guin still came to love “all things that grow” all on her own, and went into botany.

While she originally got her degree with an eye on developing hardier strains of flora for their cold, mountainous hometown, the MS of Botany she finally earned ended up mouldering on the wall and only earned her a mountain of student loan debt. Her mother endlessly disparages her for getting into debt for something so patently useless. Her father, though he cares, can’t see the value in her ideas and is often turned away from them by Elaine’s machinations. Stuck and cornered with no idea how to improve her situation, she happens to meet up with Miranda, one of her college upperclassmen, not realizing they both lived in the same area. Though she initially decline’s Miranda’s job offer — mostly out of awkwardness — she eventually decides to take her up on the offer to escape her home situation.

Internal Conflicts

Quick to blame herself for anything and everything that goes wrong. After years of being the whipping child for the whole family, Guin tends to blame herself first and foremost, and doesn’t know where her responsibility ends and others’ begins. Miranda is the first to point out that she can’t take responsibility for other people’s poor decisions, and Guin is slowly trying to feel her way to a proper measure of blame.

Her conflict is mirrored in Or’Yuhenal, who struggles deeply with fear of his own explosive emotions. Though the struggle they face is different, they both tend to blame themselves, and so they learn forgiveness for self by forgiving each other.

External Conflicts

Despite her father’s complicated but protective love, their relationship is constantly on its ear because of Elaine. The pretty princess developed narcissistic tendencies from a young age, and easily manipulated her mother. While originally targeting Arthur and making him the bad guy for everything, once Guin grew a little older and started bonding with their father, Elaine changed targets. She wanted her father to prefer her over Guin, the same way her mother did. This led her to constantly frame Guin in the worst light possible—as lazy, a liar, a thief, selfish, childish, and stubborn. Gavin is aware of Elaine’s machinations to some degree, but when Guin was younger, she could somewhat stand up for herself and tell the truth. He didn’t realize her ability to do so faded every time someone believed Elaine over her, until she nigh lost the ability completely. This made him think that Guin was admitting to things Elaine accused her of, when really, she just wasn’t bothering to fight back.

Primary conflict is with her sister, Elaine. Elaine is set to inherit the flower shop. She’s actually good at it, unlike Guin, but she’s easily bored and would rather blow money on shopping and partying. She’s spent years dumping all her responsibilities on Guin, who was easily manipulated. However, Elaine lost her slave when Guin took up the job with Miranda, and after realizing Guin was really trying to distance them, Elaine starts persuading Guin to come back. First, it’s with apologies and promises to never repeat her poor behavior. Then, it’s with guilt-tripping. Then, with threats. As Elaine’s rage boils, she oversteps bounds and catches her sister in an intimate moment with Or, and leaks a video of them to the internet. Showing it to the entire family means they all come down on Guin with rage and disgust, and Guin, with Or at her side, gives them a mighty fuck-off because she understands fully that no matter what they say or do, she is not responsible for their bad behavior.

The interference of Guin’s sister puts Guin ill at ease in her relationship with Miranda, who hates people across the board. Miranda’s peace — and moreover, the aliens’ secrecy — is in jeopardy because of Guin’s family. However, even when her carelessness results in a video of Or being leaked to the internet, Miranda insists there is nothing to forgive because she is not at fault for her family being a pack of untrained mutts. Miranda simply brings forward the release date of her new novel and rides the sensation of the video for publicity.

With her sister outing the delegation, Guin fears how Or will react to his likeness — and even more embarrassingly, their tryst — being released on the internet. He initially leaves and says nothing after seeing the video, which leaves Guin brokenhearted and sure of his rejection. However, he knew his initial gut reaction was likely to hurt her even more, and isolated himself to calm down and think rationally. He loves Guin, and assures her that he can see the boundaries between herself and others. Likewise, he asks if she can see why his initial reaction was done out of love and a desire not to hurt her, and she says she does.
