Personality

  • Damballa has a tendency to come off as aggressive, everything he does is a bit aggressive, his talking, his to the point nature. It’s his way of protecting himself, though he doesn’t always realize that it may be taken as rude.
  • He keeps his past a secret, partly because he is embarrassed by it, and partly because he tried very hard not to remember it.
  • His voice is deep, and raspy, seeing as he has no real lips, it sounds like it is coming from his belly more than his mouth.
  • Not the best in social situations, but tries to be friends with everyone.
  • He tends to be a bit shy, because of his childhood and all, but he tries to be friendly to all. Is a little standoffish because of his parents disowning him because of his looks, he always kind of has a fear people won’t accept him because of them.
  • Overthinks everything, to a fault. Has terrible anxiety, though presents himself in a way that he thinks fools people. His mind is at a constant battle, but he’s learned to outwardly project a much more confident demeanor.
  • He did spend a long time alone, so it a bit crazy, though he hides it well for the most part. Though sometimes he can be heard talking to himself, though he uses his familiar to play it off.
  • Without having a normal education, he isn’t the brightest color in the box, but he tries hard and loves to learn
  • Loves reading.
  • Loves writing and story telling.

History

  • Born into a family of noble birth, but was looked down on even as a child for his looks
  • He stayed with his birth family until he was about school age, and then he had a bit of a bad experience. They didn’t want to send him to school, they didn’t want more people to know about their abomination of a son. They were still dreadfully embarrassed by him, even at this time. They tried to hide him away, and for a while all that knew about him was his little clan, none of the other nobles knew. Because of this, he wasn’t very well educated starting at a young age. His parents hired him a secret tutor, but the tutor was trash and basically just did it to take his parents money. He was also a bit scared of Cad. His family saw him as stupid, because the tutor swore he just wasn’t learning, but really it had everything to do with him just not being taught. Later in life, he found a mentor that helped him learn more about things he couldn’t read about.
  • Fled to the wilds after an accident that he was scared would cause his family to either disown or kill him. Never looked back.
  • When he was about 14, he was playing with aka being picked on by some of the other noble children his age. One of his newly formed boney growths accidentally stabbed one of them in the eye when he was coming to attack Damballa. The kid ended up running home. Damballa never knew what happened to the kid because he didn’t stick around to find out. He knew their would be retribution, and knowing that it had been one of the high noble kids, there was a significant chance he would be sentenced to death. He knew his family wouldn’t do anything to protect him… So he ran.
  • He barley survived for the next two years. He found a few bands of wanders, but he never stuck with them long, just long enough to get food and learn a little bit. They all ended up going to Faline, and he had zero desire to return there. He knew he would be easily recognizable. So he learned as much as he could from the people that passed by, some of them were kind, and some he had to steal food from. But, he survived by the skin of his teeth…
  • It was at about 16 that he found his mentor. Wandering through the wilds, he found an old bovine, his face skinless just like Damballa’s. The mentor was a bit of a cranky old man, but they soon realized they had quite a bit in common. Both of noble birth, both shunned by their families… And they both had magic.
  • Damballa always knew he had magic, but he never explored it. This was at a time when mages were not wildly accepted, and he was afraid to stand out anymore. His mentor instilled a love of magic within him, and showed him that it was something that was okay to have. He also helped him fill in gaps of things he hadn’t learned from missing out on school.
  • Damballa’s favorite thing about his mentor, was his library. Okay, there were other beneficial things, but this was his favorite. He loved to read, once he had learned how to read as a child, it was the way he learned everything. He was still drawn to books even to this day. And believes there is always something new to learn
  • His mentor had a small farm, and so they lived together and worked the farm together to keep themselves fed.
  • Few travelers passed by, but as Damballa got older, much to the chagrin of his mentor, would always offer them a meal and a book to read as long as they left one in return.
  • When Damballa was 30, his mentor passed away, leaving everything he had to Damballa, who he saw as a son.
  • Damballa mourned the death of his mentor for a solid year, doing nothing but sitting in his cabin and reading his books. He was lost without him, and he began to turn away travelers, even though they had heard previously of his kindness. After the year, he pulled himself out of his own head by some miracle, thinking enough was enough, and began to try to interact with others again.
  • He began to seek out travelers, wandering further away from his home than he had in the past. He began talking to them, and hearing of their travels, and he began to write their stories as time went on. He wanted to document the amazing things he heard, and have it to share with the other guests that he had.
  • He shared the stories as much as he could with other travelers, and even found sometimes that others saught him out for his stories, and the stories he had collected.
  • He was still socially awkward on his own, but when talking about other’s stories, he became much more animated, and found it easier to talk to others. Talking about himself was something he avoided at all costs.
  • Was born with a small layer of skin on his face, but it peeled away as he reached his teens.

Damballa has the ability to listen to someone speak, and have a near perfect memory of what they said. It has been incredibly handy later in life, when others dictate their stories to him. At first it was just remembering bad things, that he didn’t want to remember. Particular things that other said to him, normally of the variety that hurt. He could remember the arguments of his parents that he’d overheard about him perfectly, even after thirty years. He didn’t realize at a young age that this was strange, for he didn’t really have any friends to discuss it with. As he aged, his memory became better. He could memorize some of the things he read, and recite them back perfectly. It wasn’t until he met him mentor that he realized this actually was his magic, and a quite useful one. He then learned how to control it more, able to read and memorize whole chapters at a time. (As he gains more power, he will learn to memorize whole books and such). What he recently found out, as he began to take in more travelers and record their stories, was that he could remember perfectly what they said. (As times go on, he will be able to dictate them instead of just write them). It isn’t a terribly flashy magic, but it is one that he treasures.

Costs

  • Magic use is painful for the caster. (2) - Use of his magic is painful to Damballa, he can normally push through it to get his stories done, but it makes his boney growths feel like they are breaking off at the end of every time he uses it.
