Appearance

Zakotsu is a tall and muscular young man with a tanned complexion, shaggy auburn hair that falls over the right side of his face and sticks up in certain areas and matured, upturned peach eyes. He also has both of his ears pierced.

His usual school uniform consists of black trousers, a white button down shirt with a bright orange tie, a grey ribbed sweater underneath with a dark forest green blazer that have the sleeves rolled up to 3/4 length to show off his forearms and orange matching sneakers. During the spring and summer, he also wears his summer uniform that consists of gray trousers, a white shirt with a yellow polka-dotted tie and orange sneakers.

While swimming, he wears dark green long leg swim pants that have orange patterns going down the sides on them.

Personality

Zakotsu is the teasing older brother type that occasionally comes across as super cocky when he first meets people. Despite being an only child, Zakotsu takes elements of what it means to be a sibling from video games and uses them as apart of his personality. With a level-head and a kind heart, he is very easy to fluster and embarrass, allowing his facade crack in the face of others. He's quick to pout or sulk when things upset him or don't go his way and due to this, he is often picked on by the other members of the swim club. Despite his flaws, Zakotsu is a very passionate and loyal friend, doing whatever humanly possible to make sure that the other members of the swim club, as well as those outside of the club, are happy and supported. 

When it comes to relationships, Zakotsu tends to form unhealthy crushes on people he deems "attractive"and often struggles to come to terms with how to handle it and his feelings. Due to this, he tends to be blinded from toxic people in his life because they're "a pretty face".

History

Childhood

At a young age, Zakotsu was in a terrible car accident with his parents which caused a lot of trauma on his spine and almost caused it to snap in half. Zakotsu went through hydrotherapy to recover faster from his injury, in which he learned to love the water because of it. Once he was fully healed and able to leave the hospital, he decided he wanted to start swimming as a sport.

Because of the severity of his issue, he sometimes has phantom pain which causes his back to lock-up and sometimes hinders him from swim-meets.

Trivia

• Much like the other members of the Sekitsui swim club, Zakotsu's name is a play on a back/spine condition.
• Zakotsu was mistaken as being American after Nagisa coined the nickname "Zak/Zack".
• His animal motif is a Blue-Footed Booby.
• He often hosts movie night at his home for the other members of the Sekitsui swim club, but often extends the invitation to Iwatobi and Samezuka.
• Zakotsu has a big sweet tooth and will stuff his face if not chided about it from others.
• Zakotsu's sparkles change depending on his mood (i.e: when happy, he has mini suns surrounding him, clouds when he's sad, etc.)
• Being an only child, Zakotsu only knows what it's like to be a brother because he's played so many video games that deals with the archetype.
• His laugh is exactly the same as Tatsuma Sakamoto's from Gintama, who the seiyuu plays.
• With Shosho, he and Zakotsu often discuss the most recent video games they're playing, as well as fight over characters. Because of this, people often assume they're talking about girls.
