Hes been through many trials and just wanted to retire on a farm after surviving basically a civil war.....
only to get scammed and was sold land that was not capable of growing 99% of crops.
the help he hired only stayed for a short time before he lost hope, letting them go from the work contracts and just barely scraping by with the one crop he found that could grow there.....

until he woke one morning to find that suddenly over night, all the seeds he had tried planting had grow...... and grown extremely large.
in a panic he began trying to harvest the crops, investigating them to find out that his land has suddenly became a home to a multitude of spirits, who used their combined abilities to grow the plants, intending to eat them themselves.

After communicating with a few, he worked something out to give them all proper lodging and food, in return they would help him with his harvests.....
even with the spirits helping though, he quickly realized they would need more help than this.... leading to Flint going to town to try and recruit help, putting out ads for the job and getting little response, until Sal came along, bringing Andy with him after confirming that Flint was telling the truth about the current state of the property.

Now, both of them after staying with him and helping him get back on his feet....
