Childhood

Dustin was born to Flora and Marvin Winters, a happy couple who lived in Nimbasa City. His early childhood was fairly normal, although he was very fussy, tending to throw frequent tantrums when he wanted something, which later evolved into a form of anger issues and temper as it wasn’t addressed. He was also very withdrawn from other children and preferred to play by himself. But even though he had a lot of anger, he was still sensitive, and his parents noticed that he liked pokemon. When Dustin was 10, they got him a zorua as a pet for his birthday. This zorua, named Fawkes, became Dustin’s closest companion for years to come.

Meteor Shower

June 2nd, 2015 changed the world for many people, including Dustin, who was 12 at the time. Dustin was asleep at home at the time of the initial meteor shower, but he would soon see the impact of the event. His mother was on a business trip at the time, although she didn’t tell Dustin where she was headed. Such things wouldn’t be important to children, she had thought. But tragedy struck when the plane that she was taking crashed mysteriously, likely in coincidence with many of the other disasters occuring around the world that night. Dustin’s father had to break the news to him. Dustin was always a little closer to his father, but he was devastated nonetheless. For at least a month he didn’t leave his room. His father did his best to be supportive, but Dustin would often butt heads with him in typical rebellious preteen/teen fashion. He also gained a fair amount of self loathing from feeling like he was somehow at fault for the bad things that happened to himself. If he was a good person, bad things wouldn’t happen to him, right? This was very flawed thinking, but Dustin was young at the time and bottled up this belief for so long that it became real to him. His father saw him being stuck in his own head, and would frequently reach out, but Dustin would continue to push him away.

Finding the Mask

Slowly, things returned to normal, or as normal as they could be.. Dustin was still very affected by the loss of his mother, however, and he became angry at the world, listening to loud music and wearing “edgy” clothing. Dustin was also obsessed with the idea of Masks. He drew pictures of himself as one, and would sometimes sneak out to go look for them, despite being warned of the dangers. But as the years went by, Dustin mellowed out. Deep inside, he was angry at the world, angry that he was just a normal person who couldn’t change anything. He gave up on finding a Mask. How could he be such a force for change, when he was just a sad kid who could do no good (at least in his own mind)? Dustin turned 18 without much fanfare. He had always hoped he would have it figured out at that age, but he learned the sad truth that nobody really knew what they were doing. One fateful day, he found himself out in the city at night. He was with Fawkes, and he was trying to blow off steam after an argument with his father. He turned into an alleyway and kicked a trash can. The contents spilled out onto the ground, including a strange mask resembling an Umbreon. Upon seeing it hit the ground, he almost immediately knew what it was. He cautiously picked it up and examined it. The rings had a faint glow. It couldn’t be, though, could it? After all, he was just a normal person, as much as he wanted to be special… He was reluctant, but he decided to put it on right there. He felt the anger that he kept within himself flare up as he put on the mask. Everything sucked, and he hated it! But now… just maybe… maybe he could change it.

Opelucid

Dustin didn’t want to explain this to his father. His father wasn’t exactly anti-Mask, but he was extremely wary, considering what happened to his wife. But he was more accepting than Dustin thought he would have been, and told him if this what would make him happy, he would support him. Dustin wanted to move closer to the action in Opelucid city, as it was the hub for Masks, and his father agreed to help him financially while he searched for a job in the area. Dustin was taken aback a bit by this kindness, but he wouldn’t say no. His father set him up in a small apartment, and he began his new life.

He is deeply in love with her, to the point where he puts up with his bullshit (she's probably set his kitchen on fire multiple times and he is okay with it). Their relationship seems sickly sweet from an outsider perspective, and the two of them really do love each other a lot.
