THEME + PLAYLIST
The man, the myth, the asshole. Nathaniel "Ash" Ashton is a relic of the world before the war, a stalwart force for good across a wartorn wasteland... though good does not always mean nice. Serving as the General of the Minutemen, a covert agent for the Railroad, and eventually the Overboss of the Nukaworld Raiders, this vengeful soul has a penchant for chaos, a heavy chem habit, and a set of morals far too strong for his own good has left quite a mark on the Commonwealth as a whole.

STORY

EARLY LIFE

Born in Salem, Massachusetts, Nathaniel Ashton was raised by a single mother with a largely absentee father, who would later be convicted of a slew of gang-related crimes when Ash was just four years old. His mother, a devout Catholic, prayed for better times rather than taking the initiative to build her children a better future.

By the age of fourteen, the troublemaking boy had perfected the art of homemade bombs made out of mostly scrap material. By sixteen, he had already travelled down a path of addiction to the street-drug that would one day be known as Jet. By eighteen, he had been to jail well over thirteen times in his young life. Every day, he followed a path more and more similar to his father before him, until, at the age of twenty-one, notice of his drafting into the Sino-American war came by mail.

SERVICE

After a shotgun wedding to a recent college-enrollee by name of Nora Rivers, Nathaniel "Ash" Ashton was swiftly shipped off to training and before long, the front lines in service of the US Airforce. Though he hated the grueling training, his life was quickly turned around by the routine he was forced into, dropping his drug habit swiftly after learning that the wife he had never quite fell in love with was pregnant with his child. Despite his unhappiness, he forced his emotions down in pursuit of the 'American Dream' of heroism, service, and, if he survived the war, domesticity waiting for him at home.

Deployed to Anchorage, Ash first gained the title of "Sole Survivor" when his troop was wiped out during an ambush. A bullet had horribly marred his face, another burying in his shoulder just inches from his heart. Ash was discharged from his service only three weeks after the birth of his son, Shaun.

FAMILY LIFE

Returned home after extensive extensive medical care for his wounds, Ash found it more and more difficult to adjust to his new suburban life by the day. In a loveless marriage, trapped in a perfect neighborhood unlike any he had ever known, the only thing that staved away his homesickness was his adoration for his son, Shaun. Alongside the Mr. Handy robot that he had purchased, Ash served as his baby's primary caregiver while Nora worked to provide a living with her job as a lawyer.

Despite months of marriage, Nora and Ash's relationship never improved much, romantic incompatibilities leading to strain between them as Ash refused the affection of his wife time and again, preferring to spend his hours alone or with their son.

On October 23, 2077, came the day that would shape the rest of Ash's life; the Great War. Having only secured a place in the local Vault, Vault 111, earlier that same day, the Ashton family was heralded into the 'safety' of their new home. Only to be betrayed; frozen in time for a span of two-hundred years before their awakening.

DESIGN

DESIGN NOTES
  • Large facial scar + star-like scar on his left shoulder obtained pre-war while deployed. All additional scars earned post-war.
  • Body tattoos obtained pre-war, before deployment. Facial tattoo earned after the destruction of the Institute; it says "Wanderer" as a reference to his Railroad codename.
  • All piercings obtained post-war, roughly between the destruction of the Institute and his arc within Nukaworld.
  • Sharp, almost gaunt features; nose is much longer than it is wide, with a slight hawkishness to it.
  • Roughly 5'10 in height; about 4" taller than Hancock, but 2" shorter than Preston.
  • Colors can be saturated for stylization!

LINKS

ececec
Hancock ("Husband" (Partner))
Though not technically married, the two might as well be. With a perfectly matched moral code, a close trust between them, and a whole lot of passion, the two are partners in crime just as much as partners in life.

Though their relationship got off to a rocky start, these two thrive on a foundation of friendship-turned-love, just as ready to have the others' back in a time of crisis as to sit around and get high out of their minds together and make stupid choices. Whatever the squabble, its safe to assume these two will be found side-by-side, riding it out together.

ececec
Preston Garvey (Enemy, Former Friend)
A rather one-sided loathing, Ash holds no hatred for the man he once considered his best friend; the first face he ever knew in the strange new world he awoke in. It was Garvey himself who named him an enemy when Ash, on the terms of keeping the raiders at bay, took on the title of Overboss.

The two once shared a close friendship, a feeling which Ash still holds onto despite the hatred he sees in Preston's eyes for decisions made. At his core, Ash wishes nothing more than to repair the relationship he once had.

ececec
Shaun (Son)
His beloved son and his greatest enemy; though he loved him until the end, it was by Ash's own call that Shaun died, left in the rubble of the Institute to be perish with everything he had ever created.

Ash and Shaun never saw eye to eye during their time at the Institute, and certainly did not in the end. Regardless, long after Shaun's death, his memory and more precisely the memory of what he could have been would haunt Ash.

ececec
Nora (Late Wife)
Nora had loved him since high school - Ash had hardly noticed her existence. It was only when he was drafted for war that he decided it might be nice to have someone, anyone, waiting for him at home, even if he felt nothing for her.

Though their marriage was never one he wanted, and he let that be known quite plainly in his snide manner of speaking, Ash did in his own way care about Nora; her death would haunt him horribly for years afterwards.

ececec
Mallory (Sister)
Though they were never close, neither as children nor adults, Ash was nothing if not protective of his younger sister all his life. From bad breakups to walking her home when she had to go into rougher parts of town, the two were accquaintences more than anything more.
ececec
Oscar Steele (Distant Relative)
Though neither has any idea of their relationship to one another, the Courier known as Oscar Steele is in fact a relative of Ash, through descendence from the Commonwealth man's sister, Mallory.

Oscar and Ash have never met.

TRIVIA

  • Ash is the 'canon' Sole Survivor within my own headcanon of Fallout, and by extension Fallout 4. ececec
  • His story canonically 'ends' with him willingly becoming a ghoul, to extend his life-span and stay by Hancock's side until the two get themselves killed in some excursion.
  • Though unsuccessful, Ash has looked into finding a way to continue his son's work at creating synths.
  • When things get too quiet, Ash tends to have mental flashes of previous events, especially regarding Shaun, the Railroad, and other horrors of the Wasteland. He probably falls somewhere within the spectrum of PTSD, besides suffering from anxiety and depression.
  • Ash keeps in contact with synth-shaun's adoptive family, but the two have never officially met since the fall of the Institute. He does not think of him as his son, but does, at the very least, care about his wellbeing and survival.
  • He considers himself an Atheist, though he grew up Catholic.
  • Ash suffers from an addiction to Jet; it is his main vice and the 'treatment' he uses for dealing with his pain and stress.

PERSONALITY

There are two sides to Caine; the man and the mask. Many would prefer to believe the mask he wears is the true shape of his mind - violent, obedient, scornful, and devoid of emotion. In truth? This semi-former raider is little more than a trained animal, conditioned into his savage ways by years of mental and physical training that have left him suppressing his true personality and sense of self out of fear and need to serve.

Ash regards the world around him with a tongue of sharpened silver; a mask for everything that boils under the surface. A long-time chem-addict, he struggles heavily with the blood on his hands, the choices he has made, and the adjustments he has had to make in the post-apocalypse. Only an exceptionally close few get to see the turmoil that rests in his mind. A sense of bloodthirst and a taste for carnage is fueled almost entirely by a swirl of thoughts that do not quite make sense in his mind, old shadows of his pre-war life, his service, and most of all, his son.

Under all of the chaos and disarry, however, one thing can never be questioned; Nathaniel Ashton, at his core, has only the best intentions. With a tender heart for synths, ghouls, even mutants, he is a protective soul willing and almost eager to put himself in harms way for someone else. Even those who do not particularly like his far-too charming manner of speaking can agree that he has done the Commonwealth and beyond more good than harm, even as he takes on the mantle of Overboss.

RP PROMPTS:

  • Ash x Settler OC: Ash has helped a lot of settlements get on their feet, and frequents many of them. Maybe an adventure or interaction spurs with a settler, be they a human, ghoul, or synth.
  • Ash x Minuteman OC: As the General of the Minutemen in my own 'canon', Ash interacting with or training some Minutemen could be a lot of fun!
  • Ash x Railroad OC: Though he holds many titles, Ash holds his position as a Railroad agent perhaps most dear. Training a new recruit, helping synths escape, any interaction could be great!
  • Ash x Raider OC: Ash has made a lot of enemies in his time... raiders specifically. Many plots come to mind - an enemy raider, a rare friend among the raiders, even a Nukaworld raider who he interacts with frequently.
