Ex-police detective turned freelance mercenary after he was framed by dirty cops for a murder he didn't commit, ruining his reputation and forcing him to make money doing unsavory work elsewhere.

Lauro is an honest kind of guy. While he didn't necessarily join the police to do good, he didn't dislike it. He was in the detective business to pick apart the cases because that was what interested him. Helping people was just a natural consequence of that. This did, unfortunately, make him an easy target for those in his line of work that wanted to abuse their power. When they needed a scapegoat, Lauro went first. It didn't matter what he tried to do to combat it; his superiors made it so he was entirely unable. He was sent to prison, where he spent two years making connections. He was then released for good behaviour.

Now armed with a new and different collection of knowledge and no longer being able to work in the investigative field, Lauro turned to the second best thing he was good at: fighting. Though he already had the combat experience he gained in his law enforcement training and several years of judo training he had done as a teenager, he decided to indulge some freetime to learn how to wield a unique melee weapon - his axe. He figured it would help make a name for himself. It was naturally the easiest thing for him to do if he was going to work in the criminal underground. With his experience as a detective understanding how these things worked, it didn't take long for him to talk his way into the good graces of crime groups in the area and become a real gun for hire. 

He gets himself into trouble now and again, though he generally prefers quieter work despite his efficiency in melee combat. His specialties are Judo, wielding his battle-axe, and anything that doesn't require a lot of effort, like using sniper rifles or espionage tools.

He's developed a very "work is just work" attitude, not bothering with the moral quandries of the gruesome things he occasionally has to do. That being said, he doesn't necessarily enjoy it. He doesn't seem to particularly enjoy anything.
