BUTTON

BUTTON is a 33 year old corrections sergeant(later demoted to corporal). He briefly attended a conservatory studying accordion, but was abruptly kicked out of his home by his father and had to drop out. With only a highschool education, no degree, and no stability, he ran through several entry-level and seasonal jobs. Eventually, he took a job as a seasonal correctional officer, and this is what would stick…He transitioned to a long-term position. He didn’t start out with any kind of strong belief in the values that uphold this sort of career, but quickly became disgusted by the conditions of the prison, the way inmates were treated systemically and personally, and the role he had to play. He initially remains there because he feels he has an obligation to as someone who cares about inmates’ wellbeing, and because Peaches is still there. Speaking of…they meet on the job, not in the academy, and become close after working together a lot and going to the bar together. They both struggle with drinking problems, which is pretty typical for their profession. While at first he just gets overly affectionate, if he drinks to excess(which he does too often) Button becomes suicidal. After a certain incident with Peaches where Button’s sexuality is revealed to his coworkers and superiors, he is demoted and harassed incessantly until the two of them are forced to leave(it would be too embarrassing to just fire him). Button would be considered ‘good’ according to Reverie and Hase’s belief system, because while he thinks that people are more on the neutral side of things, they are inclined to care for each other, and he possesses love and hope for humanity. What he really wants in life is peace, happiness, and acceptance for everyone.
