When They were five, Clove and his twin, Bay (they/she), wished upon a falling star to always be with each other no matter what. The magic in that star intertwined them inseparably, and as they grew a candle’s flame took hold of his heart, while a curtain’s shadow overtook hers. They cannot exist without one another, but They no longer are so close as They once were. Without their shadow, the flame threatens to consume him whole, and without his light to define what she is not, she is threatened with the prospect of fading from existence.

Clove is part of a junior heroes program run by an organization that's essentially an extension of their world's version of the Justice League. They were placed in a "remedial" team of teens with no other living situation to return to because there was really nowhere else to put them; Bay ran away directly after the two got accepted into the program, after a nasty fight they had, and the twins were living in the foster care system beforehand. They are struggling to navigate teenhood, their powers, and their doom, and must reunite and reconcile with their twin before the both of them meet their doom, because it will also bring the end of the world.

  • Clove and Bay are identical twins; Clove is transmasculine, and Bay is a butch demigirl.
  • The twins' parents are alive, but Clove and Bay do not ever want to speak to them again.
  • Both Clove and Bay's costumes were Bay's work. Clove helped design them and knows how to fix them in a bind, but Bay is the better seamster.
  • Clove's Sanctuary is a wooden art supply box with stacked unfolding drawers. In its pocket dimension is a cage where Clove keeps the flame that is his heart.
  • Clove was unaware of the fact that his and his sister's doom would bring about the end of the world, but could feel himself being eaten away at by the flame the day after Bay went missing.

Oryen Ahlberg

Many things that Oryen says make Clove very sad. He appreciates them as a teammate who's willing to help him when he needs it, but he doesn't want Oryen to feel obligated to him the same way Oyren seems to feel obligated to literally everyone. The fact that Oryen is hosting a fragmented shade of his sister in their hollow chest only makes things more awkward.

Hob Kobold

Hob is the only member of their team that knows about Clove's doom, and made it his mission to get involved in what they see as their own private business. Now they're both in over their heads, and their involvement with an eldritch entity who fenced for Hob's old gang is sure to make things more complicated the more they ask him for help. Hob gets on Clove's nerves a lot, but they appreciate that he actually seems to give a shit about what happens to them.

Theo Maze

To Clove, Theo is patient, reliable, and kind, and is a much-appreciated rock in the turbulence they find themself experiencing right now. They find comfort in the fact that they dont have to fend off conversations about their doom around him, and can instead try and offer their own helping hand to him in turn for the times he's helped them. The topic of what they're going to say when Theo inevitably has to find out about their doom is not one they like thinking about.
