Summary

Brought in as a pup, she was trained to be a herding dog, working mainly with sheep and goats. Sandy was a rambunctious pup with little care for her duties and responsibilities on the farm, but she was six months old at the time she was adopted into the family home. They were determined to replace their older herding dog, but they had started to become deterred by her attitude, the elder dog wasn't very friendly with her either, which often leads to altercations between the two as she ages. Sandy was a year and a half, it was early spring when she was brought into the city and left with the shelter after going for one of the neighbor's goats. Or it was that she was led to believe by the elder Collie, who didn't even see eye-to-eye with Sandy most days, it left a sour taste in her mouth toward humans - but she was hopeful.

While Sandy was at the shelter, there were a few families who wanted to take her along but wouldn't due to her activity levels, they didn't see her as a fit with most kids. Though, the families who tried to bring her in were always without any kids besides cats, after the few adoption fairs, Sandy decided it was time to figure out a way out of the shelter.

Late one evening - Sandy was locked in the kennels in the medium dog hall, watching the stars through a small window. Her eyes glanced and she noticed the gate hadn't been latched properly, but it looked convincing enough to whatever employee locked up. Sandy tried putting only her weight on the corner, but it didn't feel like it was enough. With a running start, the gate slants open just enough for the dog to squeeze free and make a run for it. As she faces the locked door, joy is quickly destroyed, but if she waits it out, she can slip out as they cross in, it was a perfect plan to escape. Wiggling behind the buckets of sealed-off food, Sandy rests until the morning, and like clockwork, the alarm is disabled behind the door as a voice calms the few dogs down the hall, all attempting to alert her.

Sandy slips out after they part from the door, running down the endless hall until the sliding doors zip open and the collie flies out, She is humbled by the sound of traffic and takes off down the sidewalk, heading toward the large park she can see other families at. It was the quickest way to ditch them if they even noticed her leave, so she did.

Life as a stray was vastly different from the one she grew up in; fearing humans, the collie wouldn't willingly approach any without food coaxing. But, it was surprisingly easier to get along with the stray dogs than it was with the farm dogs for Sandy. They shared similar judgments toward humans, and it felt nice to not worry about expectations. Yet, Sandy still thought about what it'd be like to end up as a farm dog again. For now, she wasn't worried about being tied to another human, who would put her right back in the pound for no reason.
