Smith is a Garbodor, who originally joined Ryan's team as a Trubbish, rejected by the wild Pokémon in a nearby area who didn't want to put up with his smell. Despite his unfortunate aroma, Smith is very friendly and caring, and he loves his friends a lot.
He is sometimes a little too easy to push around - metaphorically - as he is accustomed to keeping out of people's way to avoid backlash. Since finding a trainer who understands him, he has gained a lot more self-confidence, and is willing to stand up for himself as well as others.
