Jingyi

From Chinese 静 (jìng) meaning "quiet, still, gentle" combined with 怡 (yí) meaning "joy, harmony".

This workaholic doctor specializes in traditional herbal medicine, tailored to perfection via modern means. He insists on racing to accept every contract related to medicine no matter how trivial or difficult the mission. While some at Everest Pty may praise his work ethic, the doctor seems to be running away from something... and the pounding headaches and echoes of voices in his head are slowly starting to grow louder.

The Heavens Sent a Dragon

Word of his arrival into worlds plagued with disease spreads quickly if he is not keen on hiding himself. More often than not, these tales are twisted into rumours of a dragon being sent down from the heavens to relieve the ailing citizens. He claims nothing upon his arrival- only that he wishes to help. Dire situations where entire villages and cities are left to rot seem blessed when he marches forth into the midst of isolation without any fear of death. His fame does nothing to impede how elusive he actually is. Seeking direct audience with him is near impossible. He shows up unannounced and unexpectedly, but always where he needs to be. Whether Jingyi is pressured or left to his own devices, he will do his utmost to ease their suffering. People have learned that his disinterested attitude is more of a habit resulting from trying to keep his emotions from overflowing. His magic is more unstable due to his strong emotional attachment to humans and he must take care not to harm those he wishes to heal.

He is currently residing in Ophiuchus-I, a world known for both it's peace and endless wars. This oxymoron of a planet is both a pillar of medical advancement while simutaneously being bombarded by the worst diseases Jingyi has ever seen. Their resilience is admirable, and he will lend the reigning emperor and the people his aide. However, he must be mindful of which ropes he pulls as they knot and tangle between the warring nations.

Jingyi strives to rid Ophiuchus-I of its troubles and his ventures into new worlds often lead to nifty experiments to buy his time. He is easily distracted by the prospect of any research project, and is more overjoyed than his patients when they begin to recover. One would wonder how such a soft-hearted, inquisitive soul was once a frontline peacekeeper.

Their Voices

Prior to his current occupation, Jingyi held the position as a peacekeeper for Everest Pty. Dangerous missions required on-field medics for Talismasks and humans alike. With his calm, lenient temperament and aptitude for dealing damage, he was interchangeable as both a healer and warrior.

During his "final" mission as a peacekeeper, a spell rolled like thundering waves through some unknown universe, now lost to time. Flashes of lightning pierced in webs that dug into his heart and marred his skin in chains. Raw agony and searing trails of tears like rain. Wrought with an unspeakable loss, that kind, gentle and patient Talismask's mournful cries sang forth his final proud song before vowing never to be summoned again. He would never return to Everest Pty and serve as their peacekeeper.

Each world he jumped to and each contract he took on was just an excuse to avoid returning to Everest. But he could not get away. Although he didn't return, he was still their peacekeeper. They were watching, and their voices were stitched into his mind. They called for him in fragmented echoes of his name with words of "WE ARE OWNED."

An introduction. That is the most you'll ever hear of Jingyi's voice, if at all. He has a knack for getting his point across like a stray cat leading you down foreign roads and back alleys. Despite his reserved and seemingly indifferent nature, any who ask will receive the answer they need. Jingyi is meticulous in his efforts to remain logical, but his mind always sways to preserving the happiness of others.

Quirks: Looming over people, curious head tilts, can sleep anywhere. Habits: Holding his bell/tail, often fiddling with something, staring patiently.

  • Hypersensitive hearing
Lullaby/Soul Bind
Difficulty
Mastery

Manipulation of soundwaves to produce a sweet lullaby for his patients while simutaneously keeping threats at bay. If he is not actively conducting a melody, the patients hear a low thudding like a comfortable, booming heartbeat. Enemies perceive the spell as a dragon's screeching accompanied by a painfully high-pitched ringing that stuns them.

Serpent's Poison
Difficulty
Mastery

Used to treat patients. By altering the vibrations and frequencies of his song, Jingyi can determine the causes of an ailment and heal them. Knowing which soundwaves to produce is a bit tricky and even Jingyi has yet to fully master this healing art. The reason this spell's name is so ominous is due to his tendency to sing rather sad songs.

Leviathan's Song
Difficulty
Mastery

Jingyi has only ever used this spell once. Pure emotion woven into his song along with a voice powerful enough to pierce through a heart are unlikely requirements that will ever be met again... unless one dares to keep stabbing the "dragon" that chose to turn a blind eye.

This spell is highly unstable and the damage unleashed is a byproduct of Jingyi's own pain.

  • Battle: Jingyi's near undetectable presence, hypersensitive hearing, and patience makes him perfect for ambush operations.
  • Tail: Although his hands are very gentle, his tail is another matter altogether, and is heavy and powerful enough to be used as a weapon. Lashing it is enough to send multiple people flying and shatter bones. His top speed could pierce through solid metal. That being said, Jingyi doesn't like using his tail since his spikes have nerves and will hurt him just as much.
  • Sounds: His hypersensitivity to sounds is a blessing and curse. In theory he could use his own magic to drown out the excessive noise, but he can't bring himself to do so because it would also dampen the sounds of people asking for help. He likes to hold his bell to stop it from jingling and moving around. It also serves to calm him down when he can't concentrate due to Their Voices summoning him from beyond.
  • Songs: His songs are heavily influenced by his emotional state. Much of his magic is described to have a longing and mournful feeling. Although he doesn't actually use his voice to sing anymore, listeners often have the illusion of hearing a deep, soothing tone sometimes accompanied by windchimes and rain.
  • Offerings: People have attempted to present offerings to him as if he truly were a mythical dragon descending from the heavens. He usually can't decline their good will so has adapted to redistributing anything of use.
  • Peacekeeper/Everest: Jingyi refuses to talk about his prior occupation and only mentions Everest if absolutely necessary. He hasn't returned to Everest in well over 150 years.

To friends he is sweet, to allies he is kind, to the enemy- he will not forgive. For what did you do to make him hate you..?

Jingyi's human mentor and the person who saved him from spiralling out of control. During his time recuperating, Lei sheltered Jingyi in his orphanage deep in a secluded bamboo forest. Jingyi spent his days staring mindlessly out into the forest as the wind tussled through sharp, narrow leaves of surrounding trees. Wooden and metal wind chimes broke the silence between sips of fragrant tea. It was the calmness and serenity that Jingyi needed to battle the summonings in his mind.

After several months, Jingyi began picking up the art of herbal medicine to help take care of the children. They didn't often get sick under Lei's watchful eye, but Jingyi couldn't bear seeing them suffer in the slightest.

A tentative alliance formed some time prior to Jingyi's "retirement" as a peacekeeper and his closest ally. The grim reaper had also been tasked to a certain world to retrieve souls that Jingyi failed to save. It was a tense relationship at first, but Jingyi soon learned that he'd rather have Lykófos protect the souls than the alternative.

The two never got in the way of each other and generally tolerated the other's presence. The apathetic reaper was not so different from him and even shared his interest in rock songs.
