Selena

One of the sky’s people, Selena is deeply devoted to her family and to her role within it. She is the second-oldest of her siblings and loves them all dearly; around her family, she is energetic, lively, and deeply caring. She’s much more reserved around others–she’s not used to talking to anyone besides her family, really–but they can still see her compassion and sense of duty quite clearly. Selena sees slights against her family as slights against her, and she will sometimes react disproportionately to them, but she means well. The sky’s people were given two gifts by the earth: The ability to withstand the extreme temperature fluxes of the upper reaches and the ability to guide the paths the islands took across the sky. The dragon could not steal their hardiness, for if it did, their people would have died, and their other gift, the one the dragon cared more about, would have died with them. Now it is only the dragon who guides the upper reaches through the sky, and it has used this power to isolate the sky’s people from each other. However, as an act of spite, the dragon did model the monsters it sends to subjugate all the races after the sky’s people. The terror it inflicts upon the sky’s children who step out of line is immense, and so few are willing to do so. One group that was, though, was Selena’s family. Selena heard the call of the earth when she was a teenager, and her family helped her to keep this secret, both from the monsters and from other people of the sky. Although this further isolated her, Selena knew that if the dragon knew the earth had chosen her, both she and her entire family would be in immense danger. After years of preparations, Selena’s family was able to create a gem, imbued with magic, that would allow her to safely travel to the surface and seek out the earth’s other champions. She was terrified to leave her family behind, but Selena knew this was the only way the dragon could eventually be slain. So she said her goodbyes and left them, making it to the surface. Once there, she felt the earth pulling her stronger than she ever had before. Following the earth’s guidance led her to the unnamable human and the home she had taken over. It was Selena who tried to give her a name and found that she couldn’t, and Selena who began to slowly bring this human out of her shell. Despite Selena’s reserved nature, she quickly found herself comfortable with this human; the two of them grew close. The human had a yearning for companionship she was not even fully aware of before Selena arrived, and Selena had a determination to stay with her as they searched for the remaining two champions. Eventually, Quill came across them. Once the three of them were united, the earth spoke to them again, urging them to travel to the beneath, where they would find the last of her champions.
