Orphan, raised in Trottingham Lunar Guard barracks, childhood Bestie = Lady (future duchess) Dawn Trottingham
- Joins the Lunar guard at 18 as LT, lots of battles etc (we played them all in D&D) always with his squad (other PC's) also often alongside Dawn & her retinue (each player had one Lunar and one celestial character), up to and including the war vs Sombra
- Then when Luna goes bad Umbra sticks with NMM, promoted to Major, fights in civil war, takes Trottingham for Luna & ends up having to have Dawn's parents executed
- More battles ensue and lead towards a grand finale in the courtyard of Trottingham Castle as the Lunar characters face off against their Celestial counterparts (we literally played several sessions fighting ourselves!)
- Umbra deals a mortal blow to Dawn with his moonbeam-firing saber Nightfall, but she uses Celestia's stone spell on Umbra's to petrify him for 1,000yrs until NMM is released...

Modern-day Umbra now believes himself to be a wanted war criminal (actually Dawn survived though I've yet to have him learn this), so even though he's pretty sure 1,000yrs is long past the statute of limitations or anyone knowing/caring who he is he stays to the shadows, avoiding company or attention as much as possible with only a very limited choice of friends none of whom know much about his past
- He now works to combat the nastier, subtler threats to Trottingham/Equestria, the ones that don't reach notice of the mane 6, the ones that if he does his job properly (sometimes alone, sometimes with others), that nopony should ever even be aware of...
