Esk are ghostly nature spirits. They are the result of transformations bestowed upon people or animals who are lost, hopeless, or suffering. They live between worlds — able to take both physical or non-physical form to appear solid or as an apparition at will. Like ghosts they haunt the location where they lost their past life; their soul merges with the environment and they become a manifestation of the natural features of that location. Once transformed some esk take on a role as guardian of their new home, others become spiteful spirits or tormentors. Esk gain power from their experiences and can use this power to alter their form, increase their abilities, or create new esk.

To be added Undine was transformed from a twelve-year-old child who lost her way in a mountain meadow. In life, she was a ballet prodigy and pushed to her limits; as an esk, all she desires is to get away from the stress and pain, and be happy. She finds her purpose in transforming other lost little creatures and becoming a mother-figure to them; she embraces them, comforts them, meets their every need, and they happily accept her love without any questions. But Undine does not let her children leave the meadow. She does not let them go anywhere, in fact. She wishes none of them to experience the cruel outside world, so she is utterly determined to keep them in their little play-house for ever and ever. To some, it may seem that her kind paradise is a prison in disguise.
