A secretive but very competent adventurer, who joined Laios' party at the same time as Senshi. She seems extremely open to the idea of cooking and eating monsters, though she always eats in a separate space from everyone else, all by herself. Tanith keeps her face hidden behind a mask and never speaks, initially being considered cold and menacing by the others. However, following the credo that "actions speak louder than words," she soon gained the gratitude of her party members through her combat skills, always having their backs and quietly protecting them from danger.

On one hand, even though they only spent a short time together, Senshi became very attached to Tanith and treated her like his own family. On the other hand, due to her enigmatic appearance, some more skeptical members of the party (namely Chilchuck) could never get themselves to fully trust Tanith.

Five Key Words About Tanith

Family

Tanith's mother is a monster-lover who worked as a professional adventurer and explored countless dungeons alongside her older sister. Her father is a Naga, smaller and less powerful compared to others of his species, but very beautiful in appearance. He was found gravely injured by other Nagas, and (surprisingly for him), he was not killed but rather brought back to health by the monster-lover who fell in love with him at first glance. Tanith gets her colorful, shiny scales and hair highlights from her father.

Consuming Fixations

All known members of Tanith's family had a consuming fixation at some point or other in their lives— a fixation that nearly killed them. Her aunt was (and still is) obsessed with making money. Her mother was (and still is) obsessed with pretty monsters. Her father was obsessed with finding a mate. Tanith herself is obsessed with exploring as many dungeons as possible, taking in all their similarities and differences.

Hiding

Tanith is terrified of what will happen (to both herself and her family) if anyone ever finds out she is the product of affection between a Tall-man and a monster. Since she takes after her father when it comes to appearance, she has to hide most of her physical traits in order to feel safe. The scales on her body are hidden behind many layers of clothes. The scales on her face, her long canines, and her slit pupils are hidden by her mask. Her mouth anatomy makes her draw out the letter "s", thus making her sound like a snake. Tanith refuses to speak because of this, using writing and signs in order to communicate with others.

Monster Meals

Roughly two months prior to the battle between Laios' party and the Red Dragon, Tanith and Senshi met on the third floor of the dungeon, and ended up forming an unlikely partnership. Tanith, who was doing her best to prepare a meal out of a random walking mushroom she had caught, got stopped by Tenshi- who couldn't stand the thought of letting anyone eat something so poorly prepared. Although extremely skeptic at first, Tanith's curiosity (and enhanced sense of smell) got the better of her, and she ended up sticking near Senshi as he put together a very appetizing meal. Tanith was used to eating monsters due to her father doing the same tough she never knew they could taste so good until Senshi came along.

Cold Blood

Adding to the list of “troublesome traits inherited from her father,” Tanith also gets cold extremely easily. This is another reason why she wears so many layers of clothing. After Laios discovered she was part monster, Tanith started dragging her sleeping bag extremely close to his and even asked Laios to hold her hand through the night in order to absorb some of his warmth. It got so bad that the two ended up in the same sleeping bag more than once (though neither of them minded the experience).

Adventurer ability check

  • Weapon: Twin poison dirks- Tanith's weapon of choice. The "poison" on the dirks actually consists of her own venom. Tanith stopped coating her weapons in venom soon after joining Senshi, knowing he wouldn't be immune to it, unlike her. Nowadays, Tanith uses the dirks without poison, or she uses her steel toe boots in order to fight (she has much greater strength in her legs than her arms).
  • The silent adventurer's backpack- She always has extra clothes in her luggage, for when she inevitably gets cold, or rips her current attire in combat. Tanith also always carries paper and writing instruments with her so she may communicate non-verbally with others.
  • Ability: Increased strength- One of the few perks of being part-monster. While the strength in her upper members is only a bit higher than that of your average Tall-man, Tanith has around 80% of a Naga's serpent tail power condensed into her legs. On short, she can pack quite the kick.
  • Naga Fangs- If bad comes to worse, Tanith can always count on her venomous fangs in close-range combat. Her toxins can paralyze or kill, depending on dosage and the size of her target. Tanith is unable to penetrate through very tough things, however, such as armor, dragon scales, etc.

Laios Touden [ love interest ]

As the two party members most interested in Senshi's cooking/eating monsters, Tanith and Laios always got along well. Then, at some point during their travels, Laios ended up accidentally walking in on Tanith while she was taking off her mask, reveling her snake-like features. It all went downhill from there. Tanith had a hard time calming Laios down after he realized she was part-monster; he was positively buzzing with excitement and rapid-firing questions at her. Ever since that day, Laios started sticking extremely close to Tanith's side, always smiling at her and asking about her preferences, his actions being misread as 'puppy-love' by the rest of the party. How could she not fall for Laios after all of that? Plus his warmth always felt extremely inviting to her...

Senshi [ cooking mentor? ]

Senshi assumed the role of a parental figure towards Tanith soon after their first meeting. He never directly asked Tanith's age, but he assumed she was a Tall-man and thus much younger than him. And he couldn't just abandon someone who needed nutrition and loved his cooking! Tanith herself grew very attached to Senshi in turn, and came close to voluntarily revealing her secret to him many times. However, after the incident with Anne, the kelpie, Tanith started putting some distance between her and Senshi, afraid of how he would react if he found the truth.

Chilchuck Tims [ party member ]

Chilchuck never felt 100% comfortable around Tanith. He could see and appreciate her combat skills, sure, but something about that mask of hers and her unwillingness to remove it made him uneasy. Despite his gut feeling, Chilchuck believes everyone is entitled to their secrets (he also has plenty of those), so he never asked Tanith what she's hiding behind the mask. Tanith herself is pretty neutral about Chilchuck- he kind of resembles a mouse in her eyes, because he is small and nimble.

Marcille Donato [ party member ]

Surprisingly enough, Marcille was initially the most happy about Tanith joining the party. She loved that there was at least one other woman in the party, and the novels Marcille read made her have all sorts of crazy theories regarding how Tanith truly looked behind her mask. Unfortunately for Marcille, Tanith was not chatty, nor did she share her interest in flowery soaps and comfy sleeping beds. The two are on decent terms, but they never got too close. Tanith once asked Marcille to teach her the fire-making spell, but despite Marcille's best teaching efforts, it was a fruitless pursuit.
