Evangeline became a medic on the Allied front when war broke out near her hometown. Although she tried to save every soldier beneath her care, the fatalities inevitably slipped through—piled high. As the war turned increasingly brutal, Evangeline grew familiar with combat and body disposal alike. Once the war ended, Evangeline could not go back to civilian life. There were too many pieces to pick up. The nights seemed silent and stifling. Unable to face what was left of her family, she instead joined an apprenticeship to become a mortician. When had she started preferring the company of the dead to that of the living?
