he avoids using the word until he hears someone else call him that or imply that they're friends. Sometimes he uses it pretty loosely, though (Like he'll say "Sorry, but you'll have to try again, my friend" or something like that)

he is very transparent and will show off his emotions even when he doesn't want to

He is very content with what he has, but he wants to be a good person (and he is but he doesn't believe that)

if it's something that's important, he persists. If not, than he awkwardly backs off

Nah. It's always intense, crushing, heartbreaking guilt. Even if all he did was take a cookie from a cookie jar

When he lets others down. He tries to redeem himself

He'd prefer to be invited to feel included (even if not genuinely wanted.)

He is very insecure and is always wondering if anybody cares about "a wretch like him" as he'd put it. Being invited to make sure he feels included helps him feel loved

"This person seems just as nervous about this as I am!" he'd think. He'd then feel more comfortable because he'll be partially distracted from his anxiety by trying to make sure the other person feels comfortable
