Styx Rana

Styx was born in Octopia and raised by his mother, Rosemary Rana (Styx's father was never present in Styx's childhood). Despite being a vampire squid inkfish, Styx, alongside other vamplings could roam Octopia freely, considering the history of the vamplings and how many were unconfortable living among the inklings. As a child, Styx was a black sheep among most of his classmates. Not because he was a vampling, but because he had an interest in discovering more about his race and others like him (ghost octopus-type octolings, mimic octopus-type octolings, bigfin squid-type inklings, ect; these inkfish are refered to as phantom inkfish due to their strange biology) and he'd typically be found looking up things regarding these inkfish and carrying around a specific book that he found hidden in one of the libraries in Octopia (that he never returned; he still has the book to this day). Outside of having the impulse to try to find out more about his people, Styx had a passion for music, specifically playing the guitar. This love for music would lead to him meeting new student Rhinestone Valentine in 5th grade, who loved to sing and was learning how to play the guitar. This friendship would continue to grow as the two went into their teenage years and Rhinestone would rope in more people into their friend group, specifically Regina McKane, an ex-octoling soldier exiled from the octarian army after brutally attacking another soldier for letting an inkling invader escape, and Winter Green, a shy, tech-savy girl who lives a posh lifestyle. This group of inkfish would end up forming the indie rock band Kiss Me Kill Me, with Styx serving as one of the guitarists and backup vocalists. The group would reside in Octopia until sometime in 2021 M.E., where almost everyone the group knew got captured by Mr. Grizz to turn them into mammalian soldiers. The group, after the incident, would swiftly move to a badly kept apartment complex in Inkopolis (due to not having the funds they needed to get something better). Kiss Me Kill Me, in both Octopia and Inkopolis, has a niche fanbase, with one of the most active contributers to the fanbase being Anyo Skye, who frequently sings the band's praises on her social media accounts.

Biology

As a vampling, Styx has a few distinctive features to differenciate himself to other inkfish, most notibly his horns and his eye markings reminicient of star bursts (not the candy, obviously). He's also bioluminescent (the tips of his fingers glow a vibrant blue color in humanoid form & the tips of his tentacles glow in swim form) (his horns only glow a little bit) and can emit a sticky mucus from his hands (which is also bioluminescent) (he can't produce his own ink so he uses an ink tank that makes its own artifical ink during ink battles).

Styx also has a 3rd form because he's a vampling: his monster form, which typically activates when vamplings either feel like they're in danger or because someone or something they're trying to protect is in danger, but can be activated at will of a vampling practices going into that 3rd form enough (which Styx has tried doing, mostly so he can impress others when he wants to demonstrate his strength). In this form, Styx's horns become larger, his eyes become more cat-like, loses their irises and their scleras become yellow, gains sharper nails, causes his suction cups to move to the part of his tentacle hair facing outwards, and gains sharper teeth. While in monster form (and in danger), Styx will lose almost all sence of "humanity" and attack whoever is trying to harm him or others and won't stop until A) they're dead, B) they retreat, or C) he, somehow, gets hurt in this form. However, if Styx is just in his monster form for fun or to show off, he'll be fine. Either way, swapping from monster form to his normal humanoid form isn't as easy from going from squid to kid; this process takes a few minutes to go through, which makes Styx especially dangerous if he's using his monster form to attack someone. In this case, it's best to either stay out of Styx's way if you don't know how to deal with him or try your best to calm him down to bring him back to his senses.

The idea for Kiss Me Kill Me's first song, Hellfish Heretic, came from Styx, who was inspired by the battle of the bands trope in high school movies
- When asked about how he got the idea, he said "You know, they call it battle of the bands but they never actually... you know... fight. So I was like 'Hey, why don't we make a song where Rhinestone and I are having a music battle?'. Rhinestone and Winter were on board with the idea, but 2-Spot kinda thought it was dumb. I think she was probably lying though. She was really jamming out on the drums while we were recording the song!"
Styx is named after the rock band of the same name
