Squid Ink and Reni's child.
Puts up with all manner of typical kid behavior that he wouldn't let fly if an adult tried it. Looks after Inkar closely.
Ruben is a smart, vigilant ratdog. Squid Ink picked Ruben from a shelter due to his temperment and looks. He trained Ruben to guard and follow commands so that he could bring Ruben with him when he was working, both as a deterrent for potential mishaps and as a useful tool. That said Squid does care deeply for Ruben and would never bring him on a job where he felt Ruben would likely get injured.
Surprisingly Ruben is a very quiet ratdog. He rarely ever barks when it's not on command and doesn't howl. He isn't very reactive and has an overall unbothered temperment, which is handy for both being around a crime family and kids.
Ratdogs are a spliced animal species which escaped from the Junction City labs and eventually become a popular household pet. They’re not a perfect 1:1 of the critters that they’re named after; they have other animal DNA mixed in as well.
Ratdogs are marsupials. Both male and female ratdogs have pouches for carrying a single pup at a time. They also have ‘scent pits’ on their snouts, much like those of a snake, and their pawpads are sticky, like a geckos. They can’t climb up walls, but the sticky peets help them with caring for their young. Lastly, the ratdogs have blue blood and innards. This seems to be the exact same kind of blood found inside of horseshoe crabs - which has long been used to aide in the creation of various healthcare products. This, combined with the obvious opossum DNA, means that they are very healthy, hardy animals, which are disease free, even though they came from the sewers.
