Background

Born the second son, his brother died in the military before Gavin came of age, and he de-facto became the heir of his father’s landscaping business. He fell in love with the cute and adorable Aurora, daughter of the local florist, when they were still in school, and they got married as soon as they graduated.

He’d always known she was a little selfish and childish, but those sorts of things were just cute when they were dating. It wasn’t until their third child, Guinevere, was born that he realized what a problem Aurora was. Aurora rejected Guinevere as “creepy” and instead focused all her energy on Elaine, to the point of doubling-down. Between Aurora’s reaction and Guin looking almost nothing like either of them, Gavin suspected that Guin wasn’t their child, and had a paternity test done in secret when he took Guin in for one of her checkups. He proved that she was their child.

Knowing that Guin was his child for sure sealed the deal for Gavin, but frustrated his relationship with his wife, as he came to terms with how she was seriously neglecting their youngest. This relationship would never recover—not between husband and wife, nor between mother and youngest daughter. Guin knows about this, as her father has spoken to her about it when she asked.

Despite her father’s complicated but protective love, their relationship is constantly on its ear because of Elaine. The pretty princess developed narcissistic tendencies from a young age, and easily manipulated her mother. While originally targeting Arthur and making him the bad guy for everything, once Guin grew a little older and started bonding with their father, Elaine changed targets. She wanted her father to prefer her over Guin, the same way her mother did. This led her to constantly frame Guin in the worst light possible—as lazy, a liar, a thief, selfish, childish, and stubborn. Gavin is aware of Elaine’s machinations to some degree, but when Guin was younger, she could somewhat stand up for herself and tell the truth. He didn’t realize her ability to do so faded every time someone believed Elaine over her, until she nigh lost the ability completely. This made him think that Guin was admitting to things Elaine accused her of, when really, she just wasn’t bothering to fight back.
