Story
Ophelia, real name Delaina Pretorius. Former rank P35 member of the IPC's technology department. Originally from the Intelligentsia Guild, but was poached into the IPC for her advancements in biomechanics. Besides her intellectual pursuits, she was also an excellent marksman, having taken up firearms training from a young age as a hobby.
She quickly rose through the ranks after her transfer, but eventually became disillusioned with how the IPC operated and how they treated their “test subjects”. Ultimately, she ended up “stealing” all of her research and defecting, however she ended up stranded in space due to not securing enough fuel when she escaped.
On the precipice of death from asphyxiation, she was saved by Boothill. Noting Delaina's IPC employee badge, not to mention the plethora of confidential IPC documents in her IPC ship, Boothill decided to “hang on” to her, hoping to be able to use her as bait for some of the bigwigs he was actually after.
When Delaina awoke, she had no memory of who she was, or even her name. Boothill was suspicious that she was faking her amnesia, but went along with it anyway. He knew her real name, but gave her the name “Ophelia”, after the character from Hamlet. He kept all her belongings locked away from her until he could figure out if she had actually forgotten who she was.
Ophelia retained a lot of her engineering and marksmanship skills in the form of muscle memory, often recalling complex information without knowing why she knew it. She’s able to perform small repairs on Boothill’s mechanical components, but isn’t sure why she even understands how his body works.
At one point, Boothill gets the bright idea to take Ophelia drinking, to see if she’ll spill her guts once she has some alcohol in her system. She turns out to be a complete lightweight, getting completely hammered after one beer, but doesn’t divulge anything about her past, as she doesn’t actually remember. She does sort of confess to Boothill that she likes him, though. After this, he finally accepts that she doesn’t remember anything about her time with the IPC, and instead decides to keep her under his wing. He still doesn’t tell her that he knows who she is, though.
Over the course of their time together, Boothill spots several wanted posters for Ophelia, but either steers her away from them, or tears them down before she can see them, so Ophelia herself has no idea that the IPC is after her.
Once the IPC does catch up to Ophelia, they call her by her real name and this conversation ensues:
Phe: Who the hell is Delaina?
Boothill: …That’s you, darlin’.
Which is when Delaina finds out that Boothill has known who she was the whole time and didn’t tell her, and she’s less than happy about it. She’s so miffed, in fact, that she basically tells him to fork off and lets herself get caught by the IPC, where she is tried for conspiracy and tossed in jail.
Boothill kind of stews about what happened for a while but ultimately decides to break Ophelia out of prison because why not? So they’re basically space Bonnie and Clyde now (minus the dying part).
Trivia stuff
- Phe starts unironically using Boothill’s censored profanity at some point, completely unintentionally
- She tends to be very proper and straight-laced, she’s basically the straight man to Boothill’s chaos
- Cannot hold her liquor, like at all. She can and will do drunken karaoke if she’s given the chance
- She accidentally punched Boothill in the chest once when she was mad and almost broke her knuckles
