Born disabled and raised by a prostitute, with only one fully functional eye, Alexander never once felt unloved. He saw the world differently from everyone else, finding beauty where others saw only suffering.
Growing up in poverty within a cult, with only his mother for support, was pretty challenging. Alexander yearned to contribute by working and earning extra money, but his limited eyesight hindered him, as people were hesitant to trust him with tasks and tools. He was known to often lose his orientation, due to his brain confusing both worlds. Ironically, this very limitation brought him to the top. His "blind" eye connected him to a world both similar, yet different from ours. This unique connection allowed him to vaguely perceive and even hear the deceased.
Realizing how he could assist his mother, Alexander easily gained trust as an "oracle" and amassed wealth by heeding the pleas of the dead. Sadly, he couldn't communicate with them, a fact he kept a secret. Merely listening to the dead wasn't sufficient; he began fabricating abilities, predicting storms and crop yields. After all, ghosts readily gave up plenty of information, so why not use it to his advantage?
One day, inspiration struck. Standing atop the marketplace, he claimed to hear the original cult leader, who had passed away, and the community readily believed him. Why would he deceive them? He cherished the cult and wouldn't harm it!
In truth, he'd long abandoned faith in the religion. Its concept of the afterlife clashed with his firsthand experiences of the other world. Moreover, he knew nothing of the old leader and has never once seen him. With no opposition, why not take over leadership? They adored him and his abilities—surely, guiding them would pose no challenge!
His scheme succeeded, with him and his mother relishing the luxuries of community prominence. Yet, their bliss was short-lived. Not everyone accepted the sudden replacement of the current leader.
On a fateful night, as a sermon echoed within the grand wooden church, a group convened outside. Cloaked in darkness, they secured most entrances and doused the structure with flammable liquids, even venturing inside to add extra fuel to the inferno.
As flames engulfed the building, panic gripped those within. Amidst the chaos, Alexander, once again confused by his visions, inadvertently followed the dead instead of the fleeing crowd, unwittingly navigating through corridors ablaze with fire. This accidental divergence led him to the lone open exit, securing his status as the sole survivor.
The scars etched across his body serve as painful reminders of the day he lost those he held dear, consumed by the merciless flames.
