(this character info is written as if Vanmir was a part of the cannon troll group. Beware, as there are spoilers for Homestuck ahead.) Vanmir Maxims, also known by his Trollian handle mapmakingDevient, is a budding cartographer and astronomer. His handle refers to both his main hobby, as well as his position on society. One, mapmaking, refers to his passion for making maps and charts, he's mapped out the sky for every season, and has come up with constellations based in ancient lore. The second part of the handle Devient ties to his distaste for the caste system, as well as his unspoken desire to destroy the Condescence. He may not look it, but he founded an anonomous revolution, looking to put opratives close to major points of interest. His full handle also ties to the fact that he makes maps for escapees and criminals to follow to hide. His associated zodiac sign is Gemini-based (♊) and his two pairs of horns curve towards the front, the forwards ones sloping into right angles, the back ones curling tightly into spirals going over his ears.

Vanmir is a stocky, muscular troll who tends to wear a short jacket over a collared black shirt. He has multiple piercings, and has two fangs that poke out on the left side of his mouth. He wears tinted glasses most of the time, which are shaped like ovals and bi-coloured. He has messy hair that is pulled back into a ponytail, and often has ink stains on his hands and jawline from working with maps. He wears baggy cargo pants with belts across them. He has tall combat boots, with hemocoloured soles. He wears a black spiked choker, and a loose tied ribbon around the collar of his shirt.
"Vanmir" is based on the Norse Vanir, who are the gods of wisdom and future sight. This is in reference to how Vanmir can hear the story narration, and often reacts based on it. The Vanir are also referred to as the gods of harvest, referring to Vanmir's odd love of gardening. Vanmir is very in tune with nature, and can almost sense when something isn't right with his environment. The Vanir are said to have struck first during the Æsir–Vanir War, which parallels Vanmir's tendency to try and get the drop on any enemy he faces.
His surname, "Maxims", comes from the term Maxim, which is a general truth, or a common saying meant to help guide in the right direction. This references Vanmir's tendency to have a small saying or proverb for most situations. He seems to have experienced most situations, or have knowledge of them. Although this trait can get annoying at times, he has a lot of valuable insight on a lot of problems. When told to solve a problem, he solves it methodically and precisely. He values precision, and doesn't care for messing around before one achieves their goal.
Vanmir was raised semi-isolated by his lusus, and barely went outside. He didn't contact many people,and mostly watched the stars. He built his hive in the shape of an observatory, and lived in the middle of the forest for minimum light pollution. He only decided to venture into society more when his lusus got sick. He tried to find a cure, but was denied any expensive medicine because of his caste. His lusus died, and he preserved and mounted the bones as a memory. He took to wandering the city, protecting who he could, and starting fights when he felt like it. His house fell into disrepair, and he fell in with some unsavory crowds.
One day, he came across Carver beating up a lowblood, and decided that today was a good day for a fight. He stopped Carver, but Carver managed to talk him out of the fight by accident. They realized how they could help each other, and exchanged contact info, eventually becoming moirails. After he saved Carver, they became closer, eventually branching out and finding a group of other friends. Vanmir fell in with a group of rebels, helping gain topographical intel for the others. He managed to keep his participation a secret, and continued to make star maps.
After he was sent to the medium, he found Carver, and they teamed up, despite technically being on opposite teams. Vanmir used his psionic skills to distract enemies while Carver attacked from behind. When they figured out about the qualifications for becoming a god, he was the first one killed. After he and Carver met up after becoming gods, they found their way back to the group, hiding their status. They fought the black king and won, then had to flee to the meteor. While on the meteor, all Vanmir told the kids were helpful hints, and nothing more. The kids arrived at the meteor, the journey was completed, and then in the unchanged timeline, Vanmir died.
Vanmir in the retconned timeline spent his meteor life mostly the same way, however, during the raid on the prisons, he watched Carver die. It was uncertain whether Carver would come back, so he fell into sadness. After Carver reappeared, he met up with him joyously, and they listened to the plan. Vanmir was tasked with fighting the Jacks, and after the battle ended, he and Carver got together, happily living as partners. It was a good life for a while, but time comes for everything, and the epilogues would soon start.
Vanmir's abilities are mostly innate, but he works hard on all of them, as well as always trying to learn new skills. He takes pride in his skills, but if he meets someone better versed in an area than him, he tries to learn all he can from them. Vanmir respects others for their skills, and tries to place them in environments where their skills will be utalized.

On the outside, Vanmir has a very mellow-seeming demeanor, however, he keeps track of every small slight against him. He often brings up small mistakes when they would most benifit him. While on the journey, he actually mellows out a bit, typically lounging around the meteor in sweatpants and a tanktop. He is still very on guard, however he lets his soft side show when he's around Carver. He typically figures out the solution to problems quickly, and can be entertained for hours with a puzzle book or a rubik's cube.
