Charlie's life could be considered relatively normal up until recently. She went to school, graduated, and dropped out of university due to the stress and streaks of anxiety. During which time, she met her best friends Tamara, Julian, and eventually Spiers. Together they would form an indie band called Penumbra and play small gigs in small venues or bars to lukewarm response. During the day she would work in a small convience store tucked away in just another district. It's not the high life, but Charlie is content to just coast. However, Charlie harbours an innocent little secret that she has no idea will explode into a life-changing event...

Charlie is a lucid dreamer. All her life she's had the same dream of communing with a mysterious infinite machine-like being. When she was youg, her parents just assumed it was an overactive imagination, so Charlie kept it to herself. But it never faded away with maturity, it was an ever-present character in her dreams, telling her about things her consciousness would never remember, but her subconscious would. One night, the lucid dream becomes the most vivid it's ever been and the voice makes a single command. WAKE UP. Her life from then on would never be the same again.
