Brazen is a tiefling sailor who has spent much of his later life trying to understand the ways of Valkur, the god of sailors, and channel this towards bringing good to the world. Before his life as a paladin, he was the only child of two poor but hardworking tiefling merchants living along a port on a small, unnoteworthy island in the Korinn archipelago. He doesn’t remember his parents—when he was young, pirates came to the port town and raided it for goods, resulting in the ransacking of his home and the likely death of his parents. He was kidnapped by the pirates and forced to be a cabin boy/servant on The Platinum Dagger, where they gave him the name Ker (pronounced like “cur”). He spent his early years quietly doing what he was told, and they eventually began to trust him on raids, where he found he was very successful due to his appearance scaring others away. After many years of plundering throughout the Sea of Swords, a freak storm occurred one night. Lightning struck The Platinum Dagger, fracturing it and resulting in the death of everyone on board except for him. He made it back to the nearest port town in Waterdeep, injured, hungry and nearly penniless, and found that nobody was willing to extend him any care or support, so he had to make do on his own. One night, during a rainstorm, he took refuge inside a church and found a priest of Valkur. The priest was the first person to look past Ker’s race/seedy past and talk to him about the sea, the mythology of the world, and other teachings of Valkur. Ker began to spend his nights in the church and chat with the priest, and after a month he finally confessed to his past and the storm. The priest recognized this as a call to a holy quest and offered Ker the chance to change his life and make something out of it. Ker accepted (admittedly because being trained seemed like an opportunity for free shelter and food) and began to be taught at the church.

However, he was still young and fiery, and sitting still to learn and become more civilized was difficult for him, so after a while of this, he ran away and took over a small ship, intending to reinstate his pirate life, as he believed it was all he was good for. This lasted for a few mere weeks—while out at sea, he spotted a pirate ship pillaging a merchant ship whose emblem gave him pause. He ordered his ship to go out and defend the merchant ship against the pirates, and in battle, he found that he had strength he never had before. (He doesn’t know it, but the ship he saved was the ship of a merchant who was close friends/neighbors with his parents, and some part deep within him recognized their emblem.) He decided to relinquish control of the ship he stole, and rode back with its inhabitants to the port town, once again deciding to restart his life. He renamed himself Brazen, declared an oath of vengeance against those who commit great wrongs, and sought to channel Valkur in his pursuit of evil. Getting established as a paladin has been difficult for him, as he’s effectively had to turn around his reputation and fight back against race-related biases, but he spent much of his twenties proving himself to the local populations and going on many sailing voyages in search of evils to eliminate.

At some point in his late twenties, he received a tip about some plunderers raiding some sort of holy structure. With the aid of some of the Harpers (which he didn’t know at the time), the group was successfully able to fend them off. Having built a rapport with the group on their mission, and having confessed his desire to know more about the gods and their mythology, Brazen was later recruited into the order, which he’s been a part of for several years. Oftentimes his good relations with sailors in addition to his sailing proficiency allows him to coordinate transport of artifacts and magical objects, and in addition, he isn’t afraid to turn his Oath of Vengeance against those who would dare disturb the ruins.
