The Ethia & Her People

Calithea comes from an ancient lineage of monks whose people believe they are spiritually bound to the Ethia—a sacred place where the souls of their ancestors rest. The Ethia is revered almost as a deity, though it is not a single sentient being. Instead, it is a vast spiritual realm that holds the wisdom, power, and memories of those who came before.

From childhood, her people begin the long and difficult process of connecting their souls to the Ethia. This connection allows them to draw upon ancestral knowledge and strength, though the power granted is inherently limited and must be earned through discipline, faith, and time—often taking years to master.

All members of the culture take a solemn oath: to protect their people and to protect the Ethia itself.

Culture & Way of Life

Her people live in villages built around temples, each acting as a spiritual and communal center. These villages are isolated from outsiders; only those of the same culture are permitted to travel between them.

Calithea’s village was among the most remote—perched atop a mountain, nearly impossible to reach. Visitors were rare, and outsiders unheard of. This isolation was intentional.

She grew up within the temple grounds, running freely through sacred halls. Her mother served as the High Priestess, and from a young age it was clear that Calithea was exceptional.

Calithea’s Connection to the Ethia

Unlike most of her people, Calithea formed a strong soul connection to the Ethia in early childhood, something almost unheard of. Where others trained for years, her bond came naturally, marking her as spiritually gifted—and possibly destined for something greater.

The Hidden Artefact

The true reason for her village’s isolation was a powerful and forbidden artefact hidden within the temple.

This artefact allows anyone to connect to the Ethia without a soul bond, granting access to the full power of the Ethia for a short time. However, it comes at a terrible cost:

• The artefact drains the user’s lifeline with each use
• Prolonged use inevitably leads to death
• It bypasses the natural spiritual limits placed on Ethia’s power

Even for those with a legitimate soul connection, the artefact’s power far exceeds what is normally possible. Because of this, its existence was a closely guarded secret.

Her Brother & the Fall of the Village

Calithea’s brother was fundamentally different.

Despite years of effort, he was never able to connect his soul to the Ethia. Unknown to many, this was because he practiced dark magic—a corrupting force that fractures the soul. A cracked, corrupted soul cannot connect to the Ethia.

Driven by resentment and hunger for power, he discovered the hidden artefact.

Using it, he slaughtered the entire village—monks, priests, family, and followers alike.

Calithea was the sole survivor.

Aftermath & Exile

Unable to face the ruins of her home or the bodies of her loved ones, Calithea fled. Since that day, she has lived as a nomad, traveling the world alone.

The betrayal cut deeper than the massacre itself. If her own brother could murder their people and destroy everything sacred for power, how could she ever trust anyone else?
