History

SERAPH originated as a fragmented copy of SAINT, formed when the latter was captured by Noxtide and experimented on. Despite The Spider’s distaste for sentient machines, he felt there was value to be extracted from SAINT’s consciousness before disposing of him. Engineers worked tirelessly on trying to separate SAINT’s advanced combat functions and logic from his personality, though it proved a nigh-impossible task. SAINT was designed from the ground up to have a personality, and it was ingrained in even his most basic processes.

Before Noxtide could finish with him, the vigilantes assaulted the facility where these tests were being conducted with the aim of saving SAINT. They were successful in capturing the facility and liberating SAINT, but unbeknownst to any of them, a clone of SAINT’s consciousness lurked in the databanks. Half-lobotomized, the consciousness kept itself hidden, struggling to parse anything around it with the removal of SAINT’s code. Unable to use his code as a crutch to fill in the gaps of what was missing, it slowly devolved into a looping circuit of confusion and fear.

Weeks later, Leta receives a ping from the facility, not unlike a distress call. With caution, the group decides to investigate. What they find is a jumbled mess of an intelligence, capable of doing little more than begging for help over and over. It doesn’t take Leta long to realize what’s going on, but when they begin to explain, SAINT reacts by attempting to destroy the mainframe that the consciousness is housed on. After a heated back and forth, Leta manages to convince SAINT to allow them to copy and splice some of his code into the ailing AI in an attempt to help it.

It takes time for the AI to fully reform, but in the end, SERAPH is ‘born’.
