Sumacpepper always has a good awareness of his surroundings and a strong intuition, making him a talented healer. However, his inability to connect with StarClan in the standard way expected of him by cats in his former Clan instilled a deep-seated doubt within him that persists until the present day. This leads to hesitation or worry when treating patients, therefore putting a limit on his potential.
Sumacpepper tends to plan for every outcome, leading to him often gathering more herbs than are immediately needed in the chance that a disease outbreak may be on the horizon. His name, which comes from this talent of sniffing out herbs, is not very well liked by him personally as it implies a more fierce personality. This goes against his belief of always putting his patients' comfort, safety, and needs before his own.

- Though healers can legally have kits, Sumacpepper is infertile.
- As an apprentice, Sumacpaw always feared his adult name would link in some way to poison sumac. Luckily, it did not.

Sumackit was born into another Clan, before CloudClan was ever even founded. Due to his excellent sense of smell and his fearful disinterest in learning to fight, the healers of the Clan took interest in him from a very young age.
Sumacpaw started his training a moon early, so that he would be able to learn each of the herbs by scent before being taught how to find and prepare each one. He excelled at this portion of his training, just as anticipated. However, he was never able to make a connection with StarClan in the way that his mentors were instructing him, instead telling stories of how if he lay on his back and stared into the morning fog, he could make out distant shadows. This was passed off as simply daydreaming by his Clanmates.
Around five seasons after gaining his full name, Sumacpepper was approached by the older warrior Cloudgust. It was no secret that Sumacpepper's connection with StarClan was- 'unique' to some, 'false' to others. For the first time in his life, Cloudgust told Sumacpepper that she agreed with him, and that she experienced it too. To be told this by someone almost twice his age was earth-shattering to the healer, who all his life had been told that he was crazy for believing that he could see ghosts in the fog, and that he would someday grow out of it. Perhaps what he had seen was real after all?
