About

Elaine was the sole survivor of Vault 111, a woman suddently thrust into the future after two centuries in cryostasis. Feeling obligated to search for her son Shaun after the end of an unhappy marriage, she set out into the radiation-scorched Commonwealth, looking for both answers regarding the Institute as well as finding her place in this new world.

Backstory

Elaine grew up in the mid 21st century, amidst all of the chaos leading towards the Sino-American war and nukes dropping. The middle child of three, she became an academic at an early age with a prowess for biology. She wasn't able to stay in the field of research for that long, however, as war efforts led to less biological research and more weapons manufacturing. Her youngest brother, only 17 at the time, was also killed in the war - leading to a growing rift between Elaine and her eldest sister, who worked for Vault-Tec. Without a job and unsure what the future held, Elaine ended up in a shotgun wedding with an ex-soldier named Nate, although their marriage was not a very fruitful one. After the birth of their son, Shaun, she became disconnected from the world and apathetic towards her new family - up until she was escorted by Vault-Tec per her sister's orders into Vault 111.

Post-War

In the year 2287, Elaine woke from her cryostasis after witnessing her husband's death and son's kidnapping in the chamber across from her. While she never bonded with her son, she felt an obligation to find him, not realizing the state of the world she was now in. Following clues in Diamond City with Nick Valentine, joining the Minutemen, and getting involved with Goodneighbor mayor John Hancock all eventually led to her finding the Insitute and her son - and she decided to blow it all up in the end, now content with her new identity.

Misc. Facts
  • Elaine's loyalties lie to the Minutemen, though she still remained at peace with both the Railroad and the Brotherhood of Steel - seeing value in both of those factions.
  • She aided DiMA in curating a peace in Acadia, replacing Tektus with a synth and assisting Far Harbor in anything they needed.
  • Elaine does not have very strong feelings towards synths as a whole, though agrees the Institute was injust towards them.
  • In the ruins of Nuka-World, Elaine elimated all raiders and established a safe settlement for traders instead.
  • Elaine did end up adopting synth Shaun, though still is wary at anything Father might've fed into him.

Relationships

John Hancock - lover

"One of the first few people that actually vowed to help Elaine following her awakening, she and John quickly bonded over both their raucous personalities and desire to do more for the world than what they have. Her main companion throughout her journey, things quickly turned romantic between them, and even after destroying the Institute they remained together - still ensuring that the Commonwealth sees peace."

Nate - ex-husband

"A casual-fling-turned-shotgun-marriage, Elaine didn't really hold much love for her ex-husband even after the birth of their son. It was clear neither particularly wanted to marry the other, and Nate made that displeasure very apparent with drunken outbursts and violent mood swings. The only reason Elaine stayed with him was because of the security his veteran status gave them - and after witnessing his death in her cryo pod, she couldn't help but feel some sort of relief."

Clara Hollis - close friend

"One of the only people in the country to actually have a similar experience as Elaine did in the vaults, she and Clara deeply bonded over their familiar feelings - even if it took Clara a little bit to open up. Both being women out of time, Elaine sees her as a sort of sister figure in the wasteland, often reminiscing on the way that the world used to be. Though they do sometimes butt heads over their methods of safety within the Commonwealth - especially with how much Clara seems to trust the Brotherhood of Steel."

Elaine Holden (Sole Survivor)

"Maybe the Commonwealth isn't so awful in the end."
