Zen is a ceramic grey lucky cat/maneki neko who was sculpted a hundred years ago in Kitsuki, a city in Kyushu, Japan, by a craftsman and merchant who specialized in them. Zen was special, because he was his personal maneki neko who welcomed visitors into his shop. Sadly, the merchant died rather young, leaving his statue shop unattended. Every statue was taken from the abandoned shop and sold, including Zen. Zen somehow ended up in some kind of cellar in America.

Due to the prominent thought in Japanese folklore that after items turned 100 years old, they’d gain sentience, Zen came to life on a snowy winter night, and looked high and low for his owner, soon realizing he was in a different place, and all alone.

Zen is really humble and kind, although also very shy. That's not to say he's a stickler; he's actually very goofy at times, especially once you get to know him.
